Moving Cacti From Partial Shade to Full Sun
    #25320849 - 07/11/18 06:11 PM (10 days, 10 hours ago)

Hey y'all! Wanted to troubleshoot a plan for moving my cactus garden from my shaded balcony to full sun.

Currently my cacti get about 2-3 hours sun exposure later in the evening. Is it advisable to relocate them to a spot that gets 8+ hours of sun, then put up a makeshift tarp tent and slowly expose them to more sunlight over the course of a couple weeks?

Moving them back and forth between their current home and the new spot isn't practical at the moment. Also read that moving cacti often is detrimental to their growth cycle.

Anyone have experience with this or an opinion on the best approach?

Depending on where you live "Full Sun" can mean very good or too much sun.
What type of cacti do you have?
Not all cacti are the same and have different preferences what they like.
Lophs for example cant take as much sunlight as Trichocereus cacti.
Many uses sun filter blankets that lets through a % of the sunlight.

Maybe you can try a few plants and see how they like it, and do the change into full sunlight gradually.
When you have seen what each cactus type like start move the rest.
Not many cacti like full on sunlight if you live in a warmer climate.
Trichocereus like very much sun but even these has their limits what they like.
The combination full sun and very warm can be too much and even if they can take it they grow better given little partial shade.

You ever tried geowing under a trimmed tree? Mine get intermittent shade throughout the day. It makes them very pretty.

What kinda cacti we talking about?

Most of my cacti are trichocereus and the I'm in the lower half of the PNW. By full sun I mean direct exposure to the sun from early morning to just before sunset.

My climate is very temperate and humid so I'm trying to increase the amount of water evaporation from the soil to discourage rot. Also would like my plants to get more vigorous growth of course. Might just try it with a couple and see where it goes.

However at this point it seems like it wouldn't be worth it this late in the season. Would take maybe a month to acclimate them, then I'd just have to put them back in their old spot a month later when the rainy season hits.

Seems like a lot of moving around. I stick yo one spot and leave them there unless i really need to move them. But then agsin im in zone 10.

Yeah I'm around zone 9. Might just do it with the two San Pedros I have that are exhibiting weeping rot.

Appreciate the feedback Ferrel!

Oh wow, that looks way worse than what's happening with my pedros. These are the same ones you said were in partial shade next to a tree?

You should consider fabric pots. They allow much more air transfer.
