Maintaining a Lab//Growroom * 1
    #25318042 - 07/10/18 07:39 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

After several years of small scale cultivating I've moved into a place that allows me to scale up my grows. I finally have a place where I can work in peace and, because of the setup, really get a lot done.

I'm at a place where I can run about 45 quarts of spawn at a time and fruit 6 tubs at once. Its a lot of work, but like many of you I'm very passionate about cultivating and I find that since the summer started and I have a bit more free time on my hands I've been devoting a minimum of a couple hours a day devoting to the hobby.

The reason I'm starting this thread is because I'd really like to discuss strategies for maintaining a grow space of this size. How do you get the most shit done in the least amount of time? Lets talk strategies for effeciency when it comes to a space this big.

I'd also like to talk about how to keep things clean and tidy when you are running tubs and spawn in the same space....today I was pulling a sub out of a tub to harvest it and I noticed it some trich that I had'nt seen before. Not a second later I had knocked the sub, sliding it off the table and onto a huge mess on the floor. Shit like this REALLY freaks me out. How concerned should I be about mold/contams in a small space like mine? How, when, and how often should I be cleaning my space?  Stamets offers good advice in GGMM but I find these strategies are mostly out of reach for the amateur.

It might be hard to tell from the pics but I colonize and fruit my tub a few feet away from my bench. The black chair is the chair i sit in for bench work. Its really cramped in there, hence my concern for a trich infestation...

Personally, I've never found contam'd tubs to be a problem as far as keeping grow room clean. I also use my grow room as a work space, which means lots of constantly moving everything around, and stirring up air/dust quite a bit.

I've had trich'd tubs plenty of times and even kept them for flushes, in the room where I do all my myc work (aside from kitchen prep like grain/PC).

I find as long as you do the important stuff clean (SAB work, etc), you can grow in a filthy space and it doesn't really matter.

That's just my experience though and I'm interested to monitor this thread for other's

i thought it wasnt a good idea to have a fh in the same room as your tubs?

cause it can blow mold spores all around and is extra wear on the filter or some shit.

Diggin the office chair I think I have the same one also the kids play mat as well as your grain drying station, going to have to make one of those. I was pretty crazy about trying to keep my place clean but if it's not air tight somethings always going to get in or if your running a filter you might be good. My schools lab had uv lights hanging that might help with contam Control. I always had a couple cans of Lysol to wipe everything down with and spray the air.

the flow hoods sucking the air in and running it through the filter trapping the spores I get what your saying but I think it'd be better to run it. If I ever get the money I'd even get an air filtration system just to have running in the corner of my room.

Im doing 40-80 jars a week making 4-6 tubs a week. Over a hundred jars of spawn in rotation. Plus shoeboxes.

My grow room is a bedroom. My lab is sitting in front of a flowhood(and used to just be a SAB)

I boil my grain a day ahead of time
Pressure cook the next day
G2G is dominating my inoculation game.

Getting rid of trash and spent substrate is by far the biggest hassle.

I work 9-9.5 hour days M-F and 5 hours on Saturday.

People be like I aint got no time blows my mind. I cook everything for my household too.

right on. have you ever considered getting into bags? I’m not sure if. I should buy a cpl more packs of jars, or save up a bit, get an AA, and start running bags. heat sealing infront of a hood seems a bit intimidating

All my teks are in my signature.

I would do bags but i have so many jars. The investment in a sealer and 1000 bags seems pretty funny when i have a couple hundred mason jars already. Maybe some day.

AA pressure cookers make absolutely no sense for this hobby when a presto is only 70 dollars and weighs less than half as much and the lid takes 1 second to put on. The ones with built in elements are the only AA that would be worth getting but for the price ill buy another stove and 4 more prestos.

Forgive me, I think I've read through all your teks but I haven't seen a method of substrate disposal.

The most shit done in the least amount of time? Bags. You can easily expand a quart to four bags.

Use the space more effectively, you basically said it: get shelves to use the space below your tubs (you could fit another 6 tubs below the ones you have now).

For cleanliness, spray down the walls, floor, mop well and leave the hood on for a day. Make a dedicated lab area with a prechamber if you want to go that far.

Also consider upgrading your pc. With a 941 you could do 12 bags in one cycle, run that once every couple weeks to stay busy.

With a dedicated lab set up, sizable pc and bags you will be maximizing your space. You say 6 tubs is a lot... But how big is your actual fruiting space, if you sectioned off the lab. Because I bet you could do 12 tubs every two weeks and work a 40 hour a week job.

--------------------
But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night

Save yourself a lot of time, and effort by getting a bigger PC, then switching from jars to spawn bags.

The amount im doing isn't that much effort anyway. I can do it on top of a full time job+life is what I'm getting at. And i smoke a fuckload of weed

If I needed to do more I would probably just go low pressure steam 55gal drum.

Bags would be my next natural move but im perfectly happy with my jars, all 200+ of them, for now so I haven't went the bag route. For me to get into bags would be like $3-400 for a sealer and a box of 1000 bags. Pretty low cost investment but I don't need a Ferrari when I'm just trying to do a couple pounds a week. The bags biggest benefit to me would be not having to shake grain jars lol. Would just feel funny to abandon all those jars tho

I just switched from doing 10 tubs a year on average to more than twice that a month. Granted I do have one helper now.
