Mysterious oats
    #25316405 - 07/09/18 09:04 AM (6 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys, I have a mystery on my hands here...
So I tried working with oats since they are so cheap and so easy to prepare.
pic of sterilized oats:

But I had a problem with them... I nocced them up with some !previously tested! LC and I didn't get any colonization in 10 jars whatsoever after 2 weeks.
Good neews is that I din't get any contamination neither but I still wonder what happend.

Some things that come to my mind:
- I did do a very long and hard sterilization (3h@18psi) the grain on the pic is the result of this process.
- do they look hydrated enough to you? I think I went like 40min boiling but not sure, it's been a while
- I never tried this source of oats before, could it be a fungicide problem? And if so, aren't fungicides supposed to solely prevent spore germination and therefore LC inoculation should avoid this problem?

If you guys have any ideas, please let me know. Meanwhile I returned to the tried and tested rye, sterilizing new 10 jars right now...
I love oats, they are so easy to prepare and I like that they don't burst as much as rye, I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.

Those don't look right. Like they were underhydrated or something.

Spawn itself is foolproof. Hydrate, dry, sterilize.
People mess up on hydration but you always can you know just check the grains
And people mess up on the drying off of grains, just go further than you think you need to and error on the dry side and you'll be good.
