 Substitute for geolite?

Hey i was wondering if this is a good substitute for geolite. I went to Lowes and found a bag of broken up bricks. They were pretty small and cheap (I think the bag weights around 15-20 pounds and it cost $3.82). I'm not sure what the brick is made out of but will it work instead of geolite?

Maybe. How porous are the pieces of brick. Do they soak up or absorb any water?
Lava rocks work just fine for me. You should be able to find them right around the area that you found the crush brick at Lowes. If memory serves, they are cheaper too. Maybe not, check it out.

I'm acutally using a lava rock/brick mix right now. I couldn't find the small lava rocks so i had to settle with the ones for grilling which sucked trying to put cakes on. So i went to see if i could find the smaller ones and stumbled on to these, they appear as though they are clay, which i think is the same as geolite? So i'm trying them out now and it seems as though they are working all right even though my PMP isn't that humid, no condensation on the walls but i think my containers might now be air tight.

I'm thinking of breaking up my lava rocks to make them easier to spread flat.
As for now I have two small wire racks that span over it to make a level place to put cakes or whatever.

my friend just breaks up clay pots with a hammer and uses that.

Yes, there are lots of things you can use
geolite
perlite
vermiculite
gravel
crushed stone or brick
course sand
glass
^ clay pots (a new one on me 
Pretty much anything to break up and expand the surface area of water
will work. Just make sure its clean and well rinsed.(most tyou can boil and reuse)

yeh i read about the clay pot but i was looking at them at they are like $5 each, so what i did not because they stones i found out were not made of clay, i mixed the lava rock and perlite but it seems like the perlite keeps soaking up all the water and when i add more it becomes really soupy, any way around this? Right now there is about half an ich of water and about 2 inches of perlite/lava rock.

The perlite should soak up all the water...
You dont want it soupy cause then the surface area of the water is lower and evaporation is slower.
When perlite absorbs water it increases the surface area of the water and evaporates faster.

^ yes he is correct, as it soaks it up, it
increases the surface area, you want it damp
at all times, but not soupy.
If its drying out, then its working, you
just need to top up the water level regular.

nope, though i keep my perlite about 2" deep, with the
water line at 1"

i can't get it any higher if i do the perlite starts to become soupy, any way around this so i can add more water?

You can but no real need, just make a mark on the water line
that you can reach without soupyness, and keep toping up
to that level as the water evaporates.

Dude i dont know what you want....as long as your perlite is wet you should be fine....dont worry about it...add water and a little h202 whenver it gets dry...
