If you need to shake while hot or you get clumping the grain has too much moisture in my opinion(I'm sure some would disagree).  It's nice not to have to worry about grains up by the lid/rim after/during the G2G/LI/LC so the lid seals properly. The only reason I ever pull hot grain out early is because I want to push another round through.

:takingnotes: thanks for the tip, clumping grains = too wet. I usually dont encounter clumps after ive nailed my grain prep unlike before. It also helps when ever i wash my dirty grains 1-2x before cookin.
agreed fast turn over is the main reason.

Awesome bikE! And Screen! Dig it!
I have a gold pan screen concentrator that I made out of wood, years ago.
That will last for quite a while just like it is.
No reason to introduce foreign material into the wood. Stain, sealer, poly, latex, whatever, just wood is good.
Dunno how old you are, but I will be dead before the wood rots out on that screen buddy.

There are a few different sizes to choose from in regard to the mat(s). Multiples can always be used, too. They are also sold WITH the controller on Amazon (in different size mat configurations).

The "Commander" line of totes is dope AF! (They're at Lowe's currently.) There are quite a few sizes to pick from.

https://www.lowes.com/search?searchTerm=centrex+plastics,+llc+commander+tote

The "XXL" (biggest one with a yellow lid - 27 gallon capacity) holds 1 layer of quart sized BALL Mason jars in vertical configuration @ 4x6,and a layer laid on their side @ 4x3 plus room for an additional 2 (laid horizontally) for a total of 38.

Light DOES make its way through the lids on the XXL (and lower size models with yellow lids). I would recommend the size up from that as pictured above with the black lid (Centrex Plastics, LLC Commander 40-Gallon Black Tote with Latching Lid.)

I have also found that the XXL's lids with the squares on them hold up better than the lids with the diamonds on them.

I will get one of the bigger ones later, but for now I'm using the XXL's because I had them already and the area I keep them in is dark. They stack exceptionally well, too. The XXL supports 500 lbs. You can stand on the things. I use them for mass storage. They are GREAT!

Set the controller to 80F, drop the probe in that hoe, lid up and chill out.

You can get crazy technical if you want to. Hook up some fans to circulate the air. Slot out a groove for the probe wire. Rig up a 1/4" barbed port to put bottled/tank CO2 in (with a regulated 20lb CO2 tank hooked to a digital monitor controller). Insulate it (inside and/or outside). Throw some weather stripping around the lid seal. Add some external monitors to display temperature, CO2 level, time since reset, etc. Put a light in there that turns on when you open it. Basically, you could make a CO2 incubator (which go for THOUSANDS of dollars) if you felt like it. Then stack those hoes... 8O

Or just KISS it. :p

Those totes can also be converted in to a large steam pasteurizer that is more practical than the 55gal barrels (as far as home use goes) AND can be run in a bathtub, dismantled, and put away with room for storage and a smaller footprint. But, that is a TEK for a different time.

:uhoh: Dude, I think you're just cutting off light & air with those big totes, and heat mats more often cook the bottom of your jars instead of speed them up. Just making the room warmer would be more beneficial.

Myc colonizes fast @ room temp.

I'm not tryin to bring you down but that looks like a bunch of unnecessary expense and items Murphy would tell you to trim out.

KISS

*sry late add. Instead of Jars in totes to be stackable, Wire racks or shelving would probably be better. Allows for air flow and light around all your jars.

The heat mat goes UNDER the tote. Shouldn't cook jars. (These totes are made of THICK polypropylene.)

Air circulation doesn't matter... no FAE in spawn incubation. (Or in regular incubation for that matter. Check out "Frank's Titi" and tell me about air circulation after that.)

Either way, it will accelerate my times. Should anyway.

Also, I don't feel like running a 1000-1500watt heater in my space.

This costs less even with the bigger 40 gallon tote.

$20 tote at Lowe's, $27 20x48 mat, and $19 controller on Amazon… total = $66.

Current costs of digital heaters where I'm at locally are $69 and up. Add the electricity costs to that... and well... you see what I mean. If I were trying to incubate more stuff than what I'm working with I would heat the whole room. That room is also my lab though (with no airflow). Strapping on a TYVEK suit and sitting at a SAB for a hot minute, inside of what is basically a SAB already, is NOT fun.

And as far as KISS goes... I don't think it gets much easier than a tote, a mat, and a passthrough plug. (Yes, the heater would be "easier" but "no" on the SAB in a SAB in a suit. The hell with that.)

Cubes benefit from light and air at all stages of growth. Thinking colonizing jars need none is outdated thinking prooven incorrect at this point.

Yes, it gets way easier than totes & heaters, just put them on a shelf. Done

If that really is the case then I will eat my words.

I apologize.

I nebber woulda thunks it.

Always been drilled in my head, even from the "big blue book" that light is a secondary pinning trigger only.

My bad.

Looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

Thanks.

I'm just waiting for the shroomery store to open so I can give myself a promotion.

T-Dog - Do what you want bud, but i'm tellin you it's extra work. and if you insist on keeping those jars dark with little airflow, then your growth isn't going to be faster at all, no matter how warm you make it.

Oh hey no worries bud. Every now and then someone comes back with tits and aquariums. I get it used to be the right way, It's just that things have changed since then.  Sorry for late response here.

The incubator could help in the middle of winter but here in the US it’s hot as fuck. I let my grain jars colonize on the countertop in my spawn lab. Yeah TMC says light is a secondary pinning trigger, but a fully colonized jar will pin and fruit invitro even in the dark. IMO full colonization is the primary pinning trigger. I’ve had pins come up on agar plates that fully colonized, grain jars I’ve forgotten about, and spawn bags that I should have spawned before leaving town but didn’t. I don’t think light is a concern during spawn production.

I used to use the same things to incubate my spawn! excpet I went a step furtur and used 120qt coleman coolers. Now I just use the coolers to go to festivals with.

Shelves work just as well, if not better...

Now for some new tools/toys...

25 gallon stainless steel mash tun and 16" impulse sealer with magnetic hold and 5mm wide seal.
Now that is how you boil and bag a bushel of grain.

That’s a sweet setup. Do you use that mash tun for pasteurization too?

That impulse sealer is really nice. I have a cheap $20 sealer from eBay. I’d like to get a nicer one.

Thanx bud. Haven't used it for pasteurization yet. Might tho. I have been getting the "PE Itch" again.

I might try running my casing in it.

That sealer makes all the difference if you really want to run bags though. Trust me. I've got one of the 20 ebay ones too. Guess what it's collecting?
