Any success with Drug Dog?
    #2530917 - 04/06/04 11:06 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I am moving into a trailer this fall and plan on buying a puppy... I plan on training it to sniff out mushrooms and then taking it to the woods to hunt for me. Has anyone tried this before? Any idea if it would work?

It should work just fine. Just make sure that the dog does get to liking the taste of mushrooms. HEHE. You need to teach him/her to point like a bird dog, not retrieve.

I knew a dude in Aus who had a dog trained to find weed...  (He used to do a LOT of buswalking at a certain time of year as I remember  )

Dogs have been trained successfully to hunt for truffles. I am not aware of any other kinds of mushrooms that they have been used to hunt.

If you're able to get one to hunt for others, let us know.

Good luck, and happy mushrooming!

My dog doesn't find them for me..
But when I go hunting she always comes!!

Her name is phoebe and she is awesome!!!
When I'm studying a specimen.
She waits quietly by...I could probably get her in on the hunt as well..
Although she is 10 years old,,(75 dog years I believe)..

So I'm glad she just enjoys being out in the woods with me...
Never barks,,, goes through some pretty damn thick brush..
Up and down hills... through streams....
Chases an occasional deer or squirrel....

Take the pup with you and teach him or her,,, how to hunt mushrooms!! And behave in the woods....
I guarantee you won't regret it.....

She's mah pahtnah!!!!!!

My hunting partner is gone, I miss her so!

I've heard that they are favoring dogs because they are smarter. Dogs can be trained not to eat the truffles.

Pigs are used because the odor put out by truffles just happens to be the same chemical as the one pigs use as a sex pheromone. So pigs will naturally want to dig down to get the truffles. They normally put a muzzle on them to keep tham from eating the truffles, and give them a few of the little ones now and then as a reward to keep them motivated.

That means that pigs will only naturally want to hunt truffles. On the other hand, pigs are probably smarter than dogs. You can lead a dog around with an empty food dish. The pig will make you show them there's actually some food in it.

Dogs have to be trained the same way they are for finding drugs or bombs. You will need samples of what you want them to find.

Happy mushrooming!
