Home Made Electronica
    #2530868 - 04/06/04 10:38 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

For a long time I've been meaning to start trying to put together some electronica tunes. By this i mean synths with hip-hoppish elements, definately hiphop beats, and probably some beatboxing.

So obviously Cubase is the famous software, but is that the best for what I'm trying to do? I'll be recording some stuff live onto my PC (eg synths), but I'll want to be able to make up quite complex beats on the PC. Also, what software is good for fucking up synth noises? (!!)

Thanks for any help. Think Aphex Twin/Squarepusher/Boards of Canada. That obvious

Fruity Loops is good to start out with. It's pretty intuitive and easy to learn, but it has its limitations, especially with vst's (virtual soft synths). That's what I have been using, but I'm migrating to Cubase soon.

Whatever you get, you need a few different soft synths, IMO. wav sequencing is cool, but vst's add another dimension. My fav:
Absynth 2
z3ta
Waldorf Attack (great percussive synth)
Pro-53
Space Synthesizer
Oddity

To fuck up the synth sounds, you need either a granular synth (built into Fruity Loops) or just a bunch of effects. Just mess around with whatever is built into the software you try out.

If you need help finding any of these, PM me.

Yeah mr kite, if you're just starting out you want to use something that isn't going to dishearten you.. I always preferred Acidpro 4 because it makes looping really easy, but I'm sure fruity loops has come on a long way since I last tried it!

I've just moved up to Cubase SX 2 and it's like having a whole recording studio sitting in your computer- most people probably won't need that.

Basically any sequencer will do. Complex beats depend on how YOU sequence them. When recording live, make sure you have a decent sound card with low latency. Then you could use the built in wave editor in Cubase, or something like Soundforge or Cool Edit. To jack up your sounds, Ohmforce's Predatohm is a filthy overdrive plugin effect. Also heavy filtering and clever automation will get you that IDM sound. I use Absyth 2 and z3ta also.
