Shiitake toothpicks
    #2530809 - 04/06/04 07:50 AM (20 years, 15 days ago)

Greetings,
I got some shiitake mycelium from fsre recently. I had planned on getting spores and playing with them at leisure. Hence I am completely unprepared for what I got.
I guess I need some advice. I have some white wood chip bedding and/or potential access to oak logs from trees that fell in December.
Would I be able to mycobag the woodchips and get these going? Or drill a small hole and insert one into an oak log and perhaps get it to colonize?

Those look wild. I think you will have to use those to make spawn from, I doubt they will be effective to use as a direct inoculant to logs. You might try to make dowel spawn from them.
Soak some dowels in water, drain, load dowels in to bag or jar and sterilize. After cooling inoculate with your toothpick spawn. incubate until ready then go inoculate some logs.

I hope this helps a little or give you some other ideas.

I got the same from FSRE. I just split them in half and used them to innoculate agar dishes. Worked likes a charm - i now have LOOOOOTS of shiitake mycelium.
Some of the mycelium I used to innoculate popcorn jars. This will then be used to innoculate the classical sawdust, bran, gypsum mix.

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't have a pc at home, but have access to one at work. From what I've read, agar would be a little much to do while at work, but perhaps I could get some dowel from the hardware store this evening, soak them, bag them, and sterilize in the pc tomorrow while working.
How long at what pressure should I cook 'em?
Is there a non pc agar tek?

Classical sawdust, bran, gypsum mix? Please point me the way to a recipe for that.)

Hopefully someone will refute or confirm this....
I would think that doing toothpicks would be the same procedure as dowels, just somewhat easier to get started?

I think we are talking about different things here. I was talking about indoor cultivation. If you want to grow outdoors the toothpicks could be used, but I would suggest preparing some more, ore better make some dowels. These 5 tiny toothpicks arent much to start with outdoors. Also keep in mind that outdoors would take up to over 1 year before the first fruits apear. So why not first some agar dishes, than make some spawn and dowels. So you can grow indoors until the outdoor logs start producing.

Just my 2 cents.

[edit] I just reread everything. I somehow missed that you dont have a PC at hand. In that case I would suggest doing it like MycoBags suggested.

Well...I borrowed a PC from work for the weekend. Last night I started my first grain jars and put a toothpick in two of them. I'm soaking a small amount of dowels I had and may soak some wood chips and sterilize them tonight. There are two toothpicks left. Maybe I should try making some agar tonight?
