Metal lids + polyfill doesnt let me down.

@mushhunter is also right sealing them also helps. its also better to place the filters outisde/top of the lids to let them dry better after a cycle.

I’ll probably try some metal lids and Polyfil at some point also. Just keep going until I find the best way for my situation.

I’ll definitley be sealing them on the top of the lid though and see how that helps!

Rinsed and washed them with the jars and let them dry for a day. Used 5 micron filter and it seems to be fine. Will see if they work for the next batch as they did great the first time around, even though it is recommended to use 0.3 micron SFD for mycology.

Btw I saw your agar thread brother legend.
ITs a bit identical to mines and was skeptic before, i see ur agar game is on spot..
Those clear strands under a light is a robust mycelium aswell its where the metabolization mostly accursm. Also try to xfer those transparent luminous rhizo.
Try lowering nutes or switch to brfagar if it helps if malt is scarce.

Josex Biopsy method and no mercy for bacteria did wonders for me. Poke agar > to pucks and wait for pins youll be sure youll get some fruiting strains, more isolation in less xfers & less wasted grains @ the xpense of time for testing a culture before it goes to grains.

Thanks bro, I’ve been trying to train my eye for hidden Contams because non of my plates show obvious contams so they could all be clean I don’t know.
I’ve probably made another 20 or so plates since that thread and have tried pda mea and BRF agar so far the brf agar is doing the worst out of every agar recipe I’ve tried but I forgot to filter out the solids. I’m sure that’s not the only reason it’s performing poorly but I’m going back to mea for now .

I hope everyone in the states has a fantastic Independence Day!

Is anyone working on my myco stuff today? I'm going to relax in between prepping some rye jars.

I have some burgers I'm gonna grill over coals and some cheap beer to drink. I dug out some fireworks left over from last year, I hope they're still ok to use.

Stay safe!

Yeah Tight, I'm actually PC'ing some Agar at the moment, cleaning the room, tossing some old subs, then I'll be pouring up plates so I can do just about 40 transfers & take a couple clones before I have guest over for dinner and fireworks.  Happy 4th to you too :hi:

I've never cooked wbs before because mine has cracked corn in it and it'll turn to mush. If y'all are having issues with wbs clumping then I'd say skip the heat and just soak it especially if there's cracked corn in there. That always seems to be the culprit. Just soak it in warm tap water for 12-18hrs and you should be fine but that's just :2cents:
And don't forget to keep that wonderful soak water for agar :awesomenod:

The long, cold soak is definitely the best way to go to avoid clumping and sticky, but here's this I posted about simmering with corn kernels in the WBS

I don't think Penningtons has corn though

I posted this in another thread but may as well add it in the OG

I use the cheap "economy mix" WBS with corn, sunflowers, beans and all kinds of stuff in it. Its also super starchy.

When doing this prep method I rinse it real nice and good

Then I bring the water to 160-175 and reduce to low on stove.

The slightly lower temps works better with all the extra stuff in there and it still has a slight stick but it doesn't goo up or clump.

So you just soak it for 24, then drain and pc?  How dry should it be before putting it in the jar?  How long do you pc?
This seed looks like it has wheat berries or something like that in there.  Would that get hydrated enough with just a soak?

Edit:  it's Milo, wheat and sunflower seed

Should be fine either way. I just did a comparison test last week with 4 soak / 4 simmer jars and they both came out looking more or less the same. None contammed so far

I soak and drain for a while. I have paint strainer bags that I bought from Home Depot that I hang the seed in. I fill my jars about half to 2/3 full (depending on whether I use them as masters or receiving jars) and pc them for about 2hrs on 17psi. You could check out Mushboy's wbs tek for reference but he does load his a little wetter than I do. You just have to find what works best for your seed mix

Ugh, one of the jars has what looks like 2 spots of myc growing on the side. I did shake them a week ago and I'm at this point assuming its because of a failed filter. Was probably the shake.

Currently my lids are metal (I cant get plastic please dont suggest this for the tenth time I've looked) and are set up with 4 small holes , probably as thick as a 15 guage needle. 2 are siliconed for injections, 2 are GE filters, with 2 layers of MP tape on top 1 layer on the underneath. Can anyone advise on how I could improve this? I do have a small bag of polyfill, I cant get SFDs. Should I maybe test siliconing all 4 holes and then flipping the lids rubbery side up, and not tightening hard? or just no GE and only half fill with grain?

Got my filter that I used at a vaccum repair store. I found a 99.9% high efficiency 5 micron filter. They worked great and cut round pieces then RTV'd them to my lids.
