White film covering my pins... what is it?
    #25304869 - 07/02/18 04:25 PM (6 years, 6 months ago)

These are P.E. variety. They have been pretty slow to show pins, which I've read was normal for the P.E. But they've been pinning for several days now, and there is a white film covering them. This residue comes off when I gently rub the caps with my index finger. I have VERY limited experience with my own grows, but haven't seen this film before. I was just wondering what it is. Also, will these be safe to eat, or do I need to trash this batch and start over. Thanks for any information.

I think it's the universal veil - a membrane that completely surrounds the mushroom in the early stages of growth. Eventually, after reaching a certain size, the fruits 'pop' out of it. So, What we see here is small fruit bodies still enveloped in it.

If I am correct, your grow is healthy and, when the time comes, should be fine to eat. I would wait to hear from someone more experienced, thought.
