Built a 55 gallon vortexing mechanical filter last weekend to replace the PITA canister filter i had previously. So far, so good.

very nice, what are the dimesions on your pond?
i have a koi pond project started, about half dug out with a fountain top pond, small river, then larger pond.
don't have the funding to buy all the goodies but wanting to finish the digging.

about 250 gallons. about 8 feet x 3ft x 3ft deep
Im actually in the process of building a 1500-2000 gallon pond at the moment. A buddy of mine has lent me an excavator. Got a concrete ring around laid and finished digging a few days ago, but its been dumping rain here the last few days so progress has slowed, and now that its stopped of course im getting bogged with work stuff i wasnt expecting. its about 20ft in diameter and 5 ft deep on the edges, sloping down to 9 at the center. trying to keep it circular so the water flows in a vortex to aid in filtering. ive got a pic here somewhere.
yeah man it can definitely get really costly. what size are you talking?

So cool! Ive been reading about aquaponics for some time now but unfortunately don't have much space, I keep guppies and cherry shrimp for now...
My gf really wants a goldfish pond at some point, ours is about to outgrow its 42 gal home.

Nice pond and nice hydroponics setup. I'm interested to hear if you get the hydroponics system reliable and stable. Reading and thinking about it, and also hearing people's experiences with it, it seems to be more challenging than theory makes it seem. Achieving a good balance between the plants and the fish seems to be challenging, although I imagine it certainly helps if productivity of either fish or plants isn't very crucial, so you can optimize for only one of both.

I just now stumbled on to aquaponics, some cannabis hydro growers have threads on it I'm reading and it's pretty fascinating. I too wonder how hard the balance is to get right.
I suppose there would be a big difference in size or something too, cannabis is much hungrier than greens.
Cool stuff. I also saw a video doc of a guy from Sacramento Koi go to Japan and meet his breeders and pay up to $2500 in Japan to bring home and sell for a profit. Wow.
Is koi breeding hard? Are there lots of people doing it in the states?

im planning a fountain into a small watergarden that cascades into a small river that then waterfalls into a larger koi pond. i have the fountain and river sized out and mostly prepped. main pond is probably going to be 4 feet deep in a 3 foot wide channel leading to the lowpoint for flattering and pumping. there will be a shallow shelf along parts of the edge for some plants.
long term project for sure, i hope to have it ready for water by this time next year depending on some other projects. seems like i am always doing 5 at once to try and use materials from one to another to help mitigate costs.
i have the pond about half dug, il snap a picture tomorrow.

I mean, yes, its about balancy ideally, but really i think the core of aquaponics is to have a sustainable, closed system. If your seeking absolute maximum output/yield, then regular hydroponics would probably be more suitable. This was more or less a experiment/entertainment for me. I already had a flood table, and needed a quarantine/breeding pool for my koi. The are also minnows IN the flood table just to see what would happen. Dont ask me why, she wanted to do it so i obliged. She wants to be a part of things and its endearing.
Yeah man people pay absurd prices for them. And theirs all these specific qualities that are desired and the fry that dont possess them are culled in huge numbers. I mean i guess i get it, if only for the sake of put myself in others shoes, but its kinda silly to me. Beauty is what you make it. I got 15 tiny guys for $10 a piece and threw them in that tank because i have a lot of things id rather spend $2500 on. Not to drag people who spend paper on a hobby they love, but cmon now, it's a fish. I already had one jump out of other pond and i was out of town for work so didn't find him for no less than a week i'd guess.
As for breeding, id say its pretty easy. Keep em happy and they'll make babies. Theyre relatively hardy fish being that they're a type of carp (goldfish as well)

That sounds serene. Trying to picture it now. What do you mean when you refer to the channel?

Got my pump installed and was about pour the concrete but thankfully i checked the forcast and lo & behold, rain was due that night. Hopefully tomorrow I can knock it out. Itll be a big milestone. -e

Cool. Yeah the only pics i saw of an aquaponics setup big enough for a decent home cannabis grow was a pretty large indoor kid pool for the fish and a full size trash can for some kind of bubbling unit and a few other pieces of equipment. And that ran like six five gallon bucket DWC units so....not sounding worth it.
Sounds cool though I'll prob make one eventually to dabble in it as well.
I agree, the video doc I saw, he was goinfinto such detail about the smaller details of the patterns on the fish and how this specimen was twice the cost ad the other one and most of the time I didn't see it, though there were some that looked like molten aluminum, absolutely shimmery gorgeous.
Anyway, it seems hella easy. For something to with profit margins that high. Build and dabble with the equipment, which is fun anyway, and just keep your kids happy. Like anything oher grow, just fish.
Even if you only get $300 a fish or something, i have no idea what average koi run for in the states, wow.

Yeah it could be profitable if you were willing to invest. I just want a dope water-based landscape for the backyard tho lol. nothing like the sound of a waterfall to lull you to sleep.

ok let me actually upload pictures, il edit this post later this afternoon. keep in mind it is basically just a few holes in the ground right now. until i finish my toolshed/well cover shed it is on the back burner, serving more as a place to dump dirt at this point.

Sorry for the delay, wheelbarrow tire disintegrated and I rotated to some other projects.
The chairs and cardboard is sitting in what will be the top fountain and pond. Have to dig a little bit more then get it compressed and a little more solid. Going to line it with cardboard then the liner. First time doing anything with it but I have done a fair bit of reading.
The project doubled as a way to closely use a bunch of dirt from leveling to lay a cement slab. I have always enjoyed koi ponds and finally have room for one. A local plant nursery has one that is kind of surprising, cactus then koi.

Haven't done a damn thing on the pond project, should be done with the house refinance later this week and things will start moving again.
Im finishing up a tool shed/storage shed first then converting a garage into a master suite, after that a couple of planter boxes, a couple of slabs of cement, then the pond should be up. Hoping for summer next year depending on my funds.
