Newly developed therapeutic shown to combat drug addiction

GALVESTON, Texas – A new therapeutic may help reverse chemical imbalances made to the brain by habitual drug use and could one day help recovering drug addicts avoid future drug use.
Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston developed and tested a treatment on rats and found it effective in reducing the animals’ cravings. Their findings are in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
When someone habitually misuses drugs, their brain chemistry is changed in ways that make it harder for them to quit taking drugs despite negative consequences. Once someone has developed this brain disorder, their mind pays sharper attention to cues that encourage drug use, making it harder for them to abstain.
Serotonin, a brain chemical that transmits information between neural regions, is a key player in these changes. There are currently no medications available to correct this chemical imbalance.
UTMB pharmacology and toxicology professors Jia Zhou, Kathryn Cunningham and their colleagues found that the serotonin 2C receptors in drug addicts do not work as well as they should. They designed, synthesized and pharmacologically evaluated a series of small molecule therapeutics designed to restore the weakened signaling.
The researchers trained rats to press on a lever for cocaine infusions at certain light cues. Once the rats learned this cocaine-seeking behavior, half of them received the most promising therapeutic and the other half received only saline.
The animals treated with the new therapeutic pressed the lever for cocaine far fewer times than the saline-treated control animals, even when reinforced with the cocaine-associated light cues.
“We are the first to show that a serotonin 2C receptor therapeutic of this type can be successfully used to decrease drug-seeking behaviors,” said Cunningham, the director of UTMB’s Center for Addiction Research. “Our findings are especially exciting because in addition to someday helping people to recover from drug addiction, impaired functioning of the serotonin 2C receptor is also thought to contribute to other chronic health issues such as depression, impulsivity disorders, obesity and schizophrenia.”
“We will continue to optimize the chemical structure and effectiveness of our new therapeutic and conduct safety testing in cellular and animal studies,” said Zhou. “We look forward to the future when we can begin clinical trials so that this therapeutic can begin to help people free themselves from drug addiction and other health issues.”

Hm sounds like an antidepressant. Seems like we actually don't know if it decreases drug cravings or just makes the rats less likely to respond to certain light cues. Guess you won't know until it's tested on humans where they can subjective explain their actions. Poor little rats being strung out on cocaine.

I wonder if it will work as well as heroin did for curing morphine addiction.

Hmm I can only imagine the cost. I could see a one months supply costing atleast $10,000.00 and not being covered by insurance. My wife went to get a prescription of nexum and the cost was $300.00 while the same mg for over the counter nexum was $24.00 really makes you wonder where they get their prices from.

Im convinced i found something very close, and goddamn its so addictive, so im taking a break. But i can do it at 1030pm and be asleep by 1230.
I like to take a benzo anyway.
But yeah curing cocaine addiction id imagine is def possible. Would be like stopping cravings for nicotine. I find these 2 addictions very similar actually. Both are "gimme gimme gimme" but you dont actually get sick. Just really hard to break the cycle
Its literally all willpower, which is just such a small part of opioid addiction, for example

I've beat nicotine, cocaine is more tricky. First of all base, and second the cuts can cause problems worse than the bitch does. There's a horrific amount of meth in the powder these days along with all kinds of inert trash I collectively refer to as dust/dirt. Rhinoliths and septal perforations suck. When it's clean it is intense yet relatively short with a smooth landing. If it ain't "pure" it ain't worth it, and one should never smoke rocks.

Unfortunately the only "cure" for addiction is to stop using. It is both that simple and that complicated, this is why replacement works for some but not all. Eventually you just have to fucking stop.
I know because "i just fucking stopped" shooting dope, smoking crack, smoking cigarettes... all you have to do is stop doing it.

If i do it at 10 and am asleep in 2 hrs its very unlikely theres any amphetamines in there. I think now that rc stims in particular are less common, coke tends to be more pure. But its not gonna be 100% at the retail level. But i got a single gram of basically just cocaine with maybe some inactive cut. If you were railing meth, it woud last forever. I find real coke wears off completely after 2 hrs. And clean stuff makes you kinda tired, but the crash is milder than adderall
As far as stopping, what i meant is its not a drug you wean off or use becauss you "need" it, you use because you want it. The reason i compare it to cigs is if you can break that compulsion thats already steady progress. In either case (cigs, coke) its not "that simple". I know people who quit oxy and fentanyl but still cant stop smoking cigs. Its pretty hard to stop smoking weed too if you really like it. Somehow id have more trouble with weed than coke. Medicinal effects i guess

Coke lasts a good 90 mins. The more lines the longer
If you use it line after line it can be detected for days longer. And yes it typically takes like 5-10 mins for the drip to even start.
If its "over in 5-10 mins" your friend is smoking crack or dmt. The second is obviously not the case.

If all you clinicians want to really help drug addicts, come together and pressure the government to stop locking people up for suffering from a deadly disease.
I don't see anyone rushing to lock up cancer patients or folks with any other type of sickness.
I see SAMHSA and all the other anti drug groups fighting to keep this new chemical out circulation, especially if it works, they make to much money with the status quo.
