Yeah, my grow space is heated with a wall mount electric heater, which barely keeps up so I use a little space heater when it gets real cold. Ive been running a humidifier but its a battle just to keep 30% humidity. I just need to learn how to dial in these tubs... Just gonna take me a bit.

Stuff the bottom holes really tight. And the top holes medium. Sometimes medium/tight depending on how fast it dries. Then adjust from there. I always start with everything pretty tight till I see evaporation around the holes. Then adjust little by little till it's right. But if u have really loose fitting lids it may be harder.

Maybe it just needs some added water during winter to combat the dry air? U still using it right out of the bag?

This batch I added verm, it was pretty wet after I thawed it out. I'm thinking it still needs misting once or twice a day. Sucks cause the sub shrinks a little, then I'm kinda fucked. Side pin city, I'm gonna go check in a minute I'll snap a couple pics.

Sometimes side pins just happen. That's why I use liners, and get minimal side pins. And it just makes it easier to clean.

Have you ever tried top layering your BK with maybe 1/2" coir?
Maybe that would give/hold the surface moisture you need, and help the BK from drying out so much?
I have no experience in the BK tho,so just spitballing.

Honestly I hope I get all 3 phenos so I can clone/print all of them. Did u see the pic of the ones he printed from? They were short with fat bottoms and normal caps. I could never seem to find the pic he posted. It's somewhere in the cult pics of the day thread. Sometime in June or July I think.

I did case one of the tubs to see if that helps. Just checked them all, and they needed a misting. Here's some 30qt tubs looking pretty good

Heres my 40qt just starting to develop, not as many side pins, this one should do okay

Heres one of my favorite things about BK,just never know whats gonna sprout up, lol.

And heres how my first 30qt turned out I ended up trashing it, but I inspected the sub for contamination, and it was dry af, but no nasty's, woohoo!

Questions: What is the procedure for re-hydrating after first flush? Is it dunkable or do you just mist it? Also are the post first flush yields comparable to coir yields? I wanna be a believer. Everything I'm seeing is impressive, but I still have concerns.

It works the same as coir, u can dunk it if it's dry. I noticed it colonized better than coir for me.

The sticks and rocks bothered me at first, but then I thought about nature and just ran with it, and the mycelium didn't mind at all.

And I would say it's AVOUT the same yields as coir but I was working with ms so u know how that is. No valid test.

Bump,
Cause people should see this! So I have been using Black Kow for about a year or so, and IMO, Black Kow is the EASIEST substrate to work with. Mush cult is packed with talk about coir; field capacity, ratios, brands, pasturize, sterilize,etc... Reading daily on the forums I see so many people struggling with their substrate prep and maintenance. And I think to myself, what a pain in the ass, I just grab some Kow and mix it with spawn, check them twice a day, thats it. I do dump a bag into a tote, rake through it, if it seems wet, I add some verm, THATS IT! If my spawn is clean, it grows, so simple. IMO BK should be a consideration for a substrate right next to coir, especially newcomers to the hobby, all the learning curves are still there, but it eliminates a BIG one, how to prep and hydrate coir! I still cant bring myself to use them. lol.

Heres my latest success, AA+ clone, 4qts spawn, 1:1, Black Kow and verm.

Im gonna open up my Black Kow gallery so most my BK grows are v.isible, the good, bad, and the uggo's. Peace

Bigsur, still an awesome thread. I'm playing devil's advocate with myself if you'd offer your insights?

I'm about to order more coir, but I'd like to try this if the cost is less or the same.

What I'd love is to do some math on costs by the tub, if measurable that would be a good number to have.

~$2.30 is the cost of a coir brick in bulk. I notice a 50# bag of BK from home Depot is currently ~$5.20. in essence my question is how many 56-66qt tubs will one bag make?

Thanks, have a good one, and thanks for sharing.

Shit I can't say, you would have to figure by volume, be my guess. If your doing lots of tubs , on a constant rotation, I would think this would smoke coir in cost. I found it for a buck a bag at wally world, towards the end of last summer!

None of the specs I can find have volume, only weight. Price wise, I live in the  burbs. Can't be sure until the numbers are crunched. I'll have to buy one unless someone else chimes in. Thanks anyways.

I dump a full bag into a 65 liter tub and its about 3/4 full. 45-50 qts is best I can say. Sorry, I am a hack grower, lol, not very detailed, I figure when I'm done going threw a few more varietys, I will buckle down and do some more controlled, measured, documented experiments!
