Wanting to birth this jar, should I?
    #2529585 - 04/05/04 11:39 PM (13 years, 25 days ago)

Im a new grower, would this jar be ok to go ahead and birth? If so should I use the dunk tek or something else?

This is the side of the jar, all of the sides are completely covered with myc....

This is the bottom, mostly covered but small amount of the substrate showing....

Make sure the tape is off the holes, flip the jar over and let it sit for a few days to see if myc starts to cover the exposed substrate. Small amount of exposed substrate at birth = small amount of contams that are gonna hit that cake.

it's already opened - I don't see why not
(besides it's not like that little tiny bit's gonna make a whole hell of a lot of difference)

any ideas how you're gonna get it out of the jar without breaking up the cake though?

I think maybe I'm just seeing the pic wrong...cause it looks kinda like the mouth of that jar is smaller then the jar itself (thereby making the chunk of mycelium within the jar larger then the opening that it would havta come out of)

it doesn't really seem that way from the top pic though - so maybe I'm just imagining shit

Just scoop em out of the jar. Seems to work.

Results

and if you think birthing that jar with exposed substrate doesn't matter your funny.

the extra substrate could just be scraped off before birthing though...so it really isn't a big deal

There's a good chance the if you have uncolonized parts on the outside there is some on the inside. I have had a friend that has had good luck with heating up a nail and burning the uncolonized substrate. The myc can't colonize it but nothing else can either.

well thank goodness i only birthed one because i think you were right about the inside part. it looked ok but wasnt as thick as i thought it should be. guess all newbies have to learn from their mistakes, curiousity and no patience got the best of me. i cut off the uncolonized portion and its dunkin in water in the fridge. thanks for all of yalls help!!
