Too many pins/aborts
    #2529115 - 04/05/04 09:45 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

What do you guys do about the pins and aborts after a first flush?

I got an awsome flush but there are hundreds of very tiny pins/aborts left in the casing..

I picked all i could, but getting out the rest would basically mean scraping off the whole casing layer....
Now the mycilium is starting to grow over them...

Ive never had a good second fluch from a casing because of this...perhaps i should just stick to flushing once then starting a new batch...

Any ideas/thoughts?

I've only done PF cakes but all 3 flushes have yeilded about the same
36 grams wet per flush per cake.

Casing may be a pain from what I read but I see those grow logs
with nice 2nd and 3rd flushes
Maybe just newbie dreams
Hang in there you'll do it
Good Luck :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

Check your growing conditions, 1 flush is pretty depressing.  Check your humidity and fresh air exchange. :wexican:

Humidity and air extchange is fine...

Should i scrape off the casing layer then reapply? Should i got throught with a tweezers and pull every little abort? that seems depressing....

I got a good flush almost 2 oz dry out of an aquarium....but i think contam will set in from the aborts...

before they rot: pick them, clean them , dry them. mUNCH them! i think they're best in tea or alcohol drink ( 1 shot= 1.5g dry)

MMMMmmm.

aborts aren't a bad thing at all IMO

unless your yeilds are lower than usual for some reason they are aborting? PF strain makes thousands of aborts on casings with coffee.

oh yea what i do after each flush is cut off the casing with a bread knife , then dunk in the fridge overnight and recase with 50/50+ dont' forget the lime, incubate and fruit for a thick stem 2nd flush then i toss em even though there is more left it isn't worht it to me. it seems like they just start pushing up a big one here and there and don't really flush anymore.

ok so you re-case and dunk, maybe ill try that

my yeilds arnt lower than usuall, just lots more pins, and thus more aborts....i picked the bigger ones to munch, i cant pick them all though...there is literally hundreds the size of a ball point pen tip

a plentiful healthy pinset means you're doing everything right..right?

do you get even pinsets? are they heavy all over? i tested an PF clone rye hydrated with 50% coffee cased with 50/50+extra lime and hydrated with 25% coffee: thousands of pins solid across the surface. most aborted since those casings were rye yeild was 3/4 -1 oz over 3 flushes for qt casings. pretty normal just wierd with a pile of minis.

i usually patch very very lightly just to slow it down about 2 days where it looks the fastest. then i wait for the rest to come up and patch it all very lightly and the first spot a little bit more and then leave it for a week and fan and baby it by not touching anything but the air
just a little spray from the mister will make the babys abort
try the wax paper cover idea from mr rabbit
-cover with a new sheet every day while pinning.

If you want to do that all you would have to do is get rid of all the casing material on top and deep scratch the mycelium. Put another casing layer and let it colonize again.

Do that instead of starting a whole new project.

Well thats what i ended up doing last night.....The masses of pins were rotting, and covered in mycilium, 2 of the casings had green on them....so i scraped off the casing layer - re cased - and now there in the incubator again....

I dont think thats what most do with casing though....Do you just not get aborts so you can use the existing casing layer? This particualr batch had alot more pins than usuall...but i always get a few aborts that i cant pick...

Thx for the advice...I want to know what you do between flushes!

cut off the casing with a bread knife
dunk over night
re apply new casing
cover with foil for a week

Most dont do that with casings. When i get a casing that has been torn apart by shrooms and after the harvest there is practically no top casing layer i will deep scratch it, dunk it, and put on another moist layer or casing material, let colonize then fruit again. Works fine. Just takes a little more time.

what is exactly a flush because afof noticed after you have picked the bigger mushies there is always new little pins and growths , question is, does he clean all those off after picking the big ones and then dunk?? it seems if he let it go it would just constantly fruit!

that prolly would be the case, but you do have to rehydrate the cake... what works pretty well, like said above, when the casing flushes, afoaf likes to scratch with a fork a bit here and there to knock off the pins and to get any overlay off, then dunk, then just sprinkle some casing layer over the entire thing (1/8 inch), incubate for like 2 days and back into the fruiting chamber... it adds a few days, but i guarentee you will have a better flush then just letting it try and throw off another flush with little water...
