DubTubs & Late Casing Trial
    #25290575 - 06/25/18 08:22 AM (6 years, 6 months ago)

I’d like to share my 4th, 5th & 6th DubTubs!

Here’s a little information about the three:

F+:
  • Grain: Cracked Corn
  • Substrate: 100% Coir
  • Casing: SPMoss, Lime, Gypsum, Lime, Vermiculite

It’s a little futher along than the Ecuador & PE, and I am hoping the pinset is still ...weell..pinning lol  I have noticed brand new pins still pushing through, so i would really like to see a more consisitently even pinset at the end of the flush - although it is still a nice grow imo  its only my 3rd [successful] mini-bulk and being an MS I am guessing tgis is pretty solid?

Penis Envy:
  • Grain: WBS
  • Substrate: 80% Coir, 5% Vermiculite, 5% straw, 5% Composted Manure/Humus, [spent] cofffee grounds 2% Lime
  • Casing: [no casing yet but will use the same as my F+ grow]

[

Ecuador:
  • Grain: BRF 2lbs (filter patch bag)
  • Substrate: 80% Coir, 5% Vermiculite, 5% straw, 5% Composted Manure/Humus, [spent] cofffee grounds 2% Lime
  • Casing: [no casing yet but will use the same as my F+ grow]

There are a few images that look different from the overall collection.
I edited them in an attempt to increase visibility of the hyphae, but idk if it worked? They are just SO pronounced when looking at then in person, so to me, NONE Of the images does Justice haha.

However if anyone can see the crazy amount of knotting in both Ecuador & Penis Envy's tubs, do they look like they have a CRAP LOAD of 'em? Or is it less than one would expect? Average? Does this make sense, because I understand that there couldn't be an "average" number of formations but - I guess what I am asking is if they look like they have pretrial of poppin' out a badass canopy? I've never seen an uncased bulk substrate to see what it would look like, except for other posters/images etc. and they all seem to be isolations or amazing genetics etc.

The Ecuador & F+ are multi-spore solutions but the PE grow is a first successful sector taken from a culture I grew on agar and am growing to treat the genetics  (which I'm quite proud of actually! Haha)

Having looked into the late casing tek, I was extremely curious/optimistic and wanted to check it out since I've had issues with every prior DubTub post-pinning (albeit having only 3-4 previous grows) with the following issues occurring:

1.70% or better, fruiting goodies opening their caps extremely early or aborting outright.
2. Side-pinning - a SHIT load of side pins, but again, they opened prematurely... (.5in - 1in)

My third (4th?) grow had - I'm happy to say - zero side/bottom pinning but still had the issue of premature fruiting bodies.

The F+ DubTub seems like it is growing beautifully at I've not seen a single fruit poised to abort or open early! HOWEVER! Lol, does anyone see anything that I don't? Anyone see something they could be improved, done better or a different idea/opinion?

I'll continue to record the progress of the cased F+ vs the Ecuador that's going to be late-cased vs the PE that'll be late-cased as well.

These are the references that I had looked at, read and researched as best I could in order to achieve the results in the pictures above, and hopefully they will be a help to some of you out there

Cool post! Looking forward to updates! Why did you choose dubtub over mono?

hey man, thanks

I went with dubs in part because of impatience, haha - 1QT...
But I had - in the past had a hell of a time with contamination. The room I grow in is directly across from a “michigan basement” (no cement floor / walls.. just a big ass dirt hole basically lol)..
I've finally been getting significant success with bulk spawn (grain) so I’ll probably have a couple monos going in the VERY near future.

But also, I wanted to check out some different methods:
  • Late Casing
  • No Casiing
  • Casing Grain Spawn / No Substrate
  • Rez Effect Tek

To see what works best for me, before going with large grows.
If a tub fails, or contams - which I can say proudly that I haven't had a single DubTub contaminate.. Like ever.. Even after 5 flushes (albeit the 5th flush amounts to 5-6 medium sized fruits, but who can complain? lol) - ANYWHO, if it contaminates, it won't be like losing 5-8 quarts of spawn
That, and more strains I can play with..

So far, I've tried quite a few different casings, and this current one, having FINALLY found a local source of crushed oyster shells, is a REALLY nice casing mix... I think the crushed shells does something really neat for your casing: It allows one to be forgiven if they were to add too much moisture when misting because it sort of ... idk makes it more "crumbly"? lol instead of matting down and suffocating the sub, like if you were to over-mist a casing of jiffy-mix etc.. even verm can do a good job of sealing up the substrate :P

But yah - I am excited to try a couple monos.. mainly because I have found my MAIN problem is during the pin growth stages, and providing proper FAE/lmoisture/humidity balance... I have had premature mushrroms on every grow so far *sigh* - and I think monos are going to be the best fruiting chamber/tek/environment for me because of this - seems easier to maintain the aforementioned balances!

I CAN say I have been inproving because last grow I had ZERO side pinning, this grow I have No side pins, AND no fuzzy feet, and Im hoping like hell these F+ fruits arent going to be itty bitty lol.. they LOOK healthy but seems to me they are THINKING about MAYBE wanting to be super short stubby little guys.. we’ll see.. if they grew if only another inch I would be extremely satisfied thatswhatshesaid. Ayoo...

heres an update on the F+ .... What do you guys think? do they look healthy, do they look like they need more or less moisture? thanks for the help in advance!

they grow UP, dammit!

Haha, it sure is good to know early / premature opening of caps is caused by:

1. Too much moisture
2. Too little moisture

........ damn! Well, now that clears everything all up!

Maybe you can bury your spent subs in the "Michigan basement", or straw sawdust that floor for some wood lovers. That could be fun!

Okay Anywho lol - here's an update on the two tubs I'm later casing.

Took a little longer than I've normally seen my tubs take to start looking but they have a SIGNIFICANT number of primordia/knots now.. and some pins have formed - looking extremely happy

HOWEVER - The F+ Tub? The images in the OP,; they had BARELY grew more, but they had opened (cap) seemingly without even really forming a full veil..

They had grown ranging from as small as 1/2 inch to at MOST - 1-1/4".. Bit they were completely healthy, they had fully developed gills and made dark, nice spore prints... Like they were midgets!
Yes it was a MS, But I grew a little mini batch from some of the same spawn, and it produced beautiful slender fruits.

Here the result of the F+ Tub (cased as normal):
*Note: I put a couple Cambodian fruits in the picture to show the scale.. Those Cambodians are just average size..

Yet here is the couple fruits that grew from the same grain spawn:

I've been reading.... Are those lit-tle teen-ny buggers so short from TOO MUCH FAE? Don't they tend to grow tall and skinny of there is not ENOUGH FAE?
