Mycogone Perniciosa AKA "wet bubble" * 12
    #25285598 - 06/22/18 04:55 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

6/22

6/24

6/25

Did some more microscopic examination. Made 5 slides. Not a single one had anything other than jumbles of mycelium.
So i made a slide of just the metabolites, and saw a little bacteria swimming around, which is not concerning because it wasn't a concerning amount, if you put a blob of water on any surface then make a slide you'll find some bacteria.

Still no other hypae/mold found still no signs of spores from any mold at all.

Playing with the blob, it still smells like a fresh mushroom, no bad smell. It appears to be made of extremely dense filaments of rhizomorphic mycelium, and you can break it apart like string cheese. Some of it bruises from being biopsied

6/26

here's the whole tub

the blob itself looks pretty bad from all the cutting

it actually looks like a blob is starting to form in another spot. in the second picture below you can see how it's just very dense rhizomorphic mycelium

----

Almost anyone would tell you that's Mycogone Perniciosa contamination. AKA wet bubble.

This kind of growth and appearance on a tub is frequently identified as Mycogone Perniciosa. In fact if you google image search Mycogone you will find many pictures from this website of growth blobs that look like what's in the above picture

here's the first few pictures that google images pops up.
some of the images were deleted from the threads so I re-uploaded the ones google cached

https://mycotopia.net/topic/80454-2-different-bulk-spawns-what-do-you-think/

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21762132

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23580673

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13699014/fpart/all/vc/1

etc...

Well this is the first time I've seen it in a long time. So naturally I pulled out the microscope. I did a few biopsies with a needle and a razor blade. Made a few slides.

What did I find? Only mycelium, regular cube mycelium, clamp connections, and absolutely nothing that looked like Mycogone Perniciosa.

Here's some pictures of Mycogone Perniciosa spores(conidia)

Which I found absolutely nothing that even remotely resembled those in hundreds of fields from 4 slides I made. Even putting the "dew drops" of metabolites showed no Mycogone conidia.

So, I reject the OMC's(online mushroom community's) notion that anything that looks like the growths is Mycogone Perniciosa.

I believe these growths are not Mycogone Perniciosa and in fact are not even contamination or indicitive of contamination and are rather very similar to the blobs that form from Penis Envy varieties.
I noticed only a cubensis smell from all of my biopsies of the blob,
I plan on personally eating some of it or feeding it to a willing friend to see if it has potency like PE blobs.

I challenge anyone to make their own microscopic inquiries into this and try to prove me wrong or confirm that these growths are in fact Mycogone Perniciosa. If you google search Mycogone infections of Agaricus species the images look quite different to vaguely similar.

I spent a good 25-30 minutes looking for any evidence of contamination and could find 0. Am I completely wrong or sane. You be the judge let me know, help me dig to the bottom of this issue.

The tub of mine above is pinning, I fully suspect none of the fruiting bodies will show any signs of affliction from Mycogone Perniciosa, and that I will not find any structures or conidia of Mycogone Perniciosa in this tub with continued investigation.

Would you call these growths sclerotia? Or a mutation in the early stages of fruiting body formation?

not sclerotia.
some sort of mutation is my guess. I think it's harmless but it could be viral, could be something like a mold that I'm just plain missing too.

Verticillium (Verticillium fungicola) occasionally also gives the amber drops just differently. I would say yours fit that bill and it doesn't quite have that classic wet bubble look. Check to see if you can find the signs of that fungus with your scope.

Quote:

...Occasionally as the diseased tissue ages, a few amber drops of liquid may form. These liquid drops often cause confusion with another fungal disease, wet bubble, caused by Mycogene sp., Figure 2. However, the difference is that only a few infected mushrooms exhibit the amber drops and for those that do, it is often only a few very small drops. Wet bubble is characterized by large and numerous amber drops covering the mass of mushroom tissue.

it's definitely not vert. and most of what people name as vert here is actually pseudomonas bacteria infection.

I've had my run in with pseudo and everyone said it was vert and then I investigated and found out it was pseudo

I had a PE tub a while back give a full flush of what I considered "blobs" til I started looking at this. These PE "blobs" weren't wet looking, and when harvested blued and had the texture of mushrooms.
The 2nd flush was all nice fruits.(around the side because the surface was F'ed)I dried these and have not tried them, but now I wonder what others think.:shrug2:

fascinating thread bodhi. i really appreciate this kind of shizzle. i got a pretty nice scope and just ordered a camera adapter for it so... game on. now i just need to learn how to make good slides.

and, that's super normal for PE mushroomnate. they are potent as balls.

Would you say this here is the same thing?
Also growing malabar, though the growing conditions weren't good..
Low FAE, overmisting, and pseudomonas(identified it thanks to your thread on it  ) also the spores were old and only germinated in LC.
Much more pins came along when i fixed the conditions and pseudomonas backed off, then everything aborted :/

Lately Iยดve lost about 20 tubs to something and idk what it was, but the tubs colonized but never pinned, I inspectd some of the leftover dishes used for inoculation and I find many of the dishes have big brown droplets, they look like a tarantulas eyes almost. Spots of between 10-20 droplets in various sized on the dishes but not so much in the tubs. This creeped me out when I saw the the dishes were infected by something and I got the feeling that I wasnt even transferring mycelium. yuck.

Have you ever had agar cultures with these droplets anyone?
