Has anyone ever tried hemp seed in a wild bird mixture ? I get my grains at a bird farm , no additives or such is ever added , all grain sold in bulk . This place is now selling hemp seed(1$ per lb) , and I was curious to know if any one has had luck using hemp as a delayed nute provider , seeing how hemp shell is so thick I figured it would act as a good delayed nute provider for some of the slower colonizing species , hell even the real swift ones for that matter . Thanx for any input on the subject . Trip n D

Folks use sunflower seed which is just as if not more oily(just softer shelled ) , is it not ? But point well taken , thanx . Rape seed is normally used by most .

you could try a good boil before pc/ing. some oil would most likely seperate from the boiled water and it would help with the hard shell dilemna.

in WBS you normally try and get out as much of the sunflower seeds as you can, as they contam easier.

forget the hemp seed idea. you can probably get it to work but not as good as popcorn or rye. hell, what can't these fungi grow on?
rye and perlite 70/30 kicks ass for spawn it breaks up very nice..even if it gets left in the cupboard over-incubating for weeks.
g2g in 12 days with 1 shake at 30 percent jars rule. bags suck. i need a flow hood then maybe i can do bags again..hmmm

well theres no harm in trying. its always awesome when someone can find a new way to do something. maybe most the time the old technique does prove better, but theres always that chance that something could prove old methods wrong and work better.
isn't that the fun of growing, and this forum?
everyone knows how to grow the regular tried and true ways in this forum... it's simply interesting and fun to learn as much as we possibly can.
so i say go for it. see if you can figure out a way to get it to work. hell, who knows? maybe it colonizes faster than other grains. you just dont know until you try it.

PS Did I mention I was not trying to get "weed shrooms" ? Just curious if anyone has tried this as a "delayed" nute provider , kinda like how 6T used to say rape seed was a good delayed nute provider , tried that method and had lots of contam problems . Sometimes confused the little black specs of rape as contams also . Oh well like Psilly girl said ... Try it you might like it ! , well not exactally in those words but just the same . Thanx all for the input ! Trip n D

fine try it but try growing it on straight sunflower seeds and i bet you'll have the same result.
as an addative maybe the oil would be a good addition to straw or is that just a myth?

i was merely suggesting that he try it if he believed it might work, it doesnt hurt anything.
you are right about it probably being about as oily as sunflower seeds (which typically contam pretty easily... and are removed from WBS for that reason), but hey if he wants to, i said go for it cause its fun to experiment. experiments produce bad results most of the time in science, but the times they dont, its a wonderful and beneficial thing.
as per the additive thing-- i dont know for sure, but i doubt it.

anyone ever heard of storing your agar dishes under 100% mineral oil in the fridge to last forever?
use some of the dish then spray with peroxide or start one specifically to refridgerate for emergencys and fill with mineral oil re-glad wrap parafilm them fridgerate forever

As far as storing agar goes, I don't know how useful the mineral oil is, I have never heard of that. I work in an immunology lab and we usually just store agar petris in a fridge. That seems to suffice, but then again I don't think we store them for as long term as you are implying. And in my personal "lab" I usually do an agar transfer or streak the plate with spores no longer than a day or two after the agar solidifies, so I never worried about it. What exactly does the mineral oil do?
As for the Guarana seed additive, I had never heard of this. I looked up some stuff and wondered if you wanted to use these seeds because of their caffeine content. "Guarana seed generally contains 8% tannins and 3.6% caffeine, a ratio 2.2 ( T/C )." from here Do you think the high tannin content might cause contam? Or were you thinking of making an extract, which has a lower caffeine and tannin content?
Thanks

The mineral oil is for storing mycelium culture indefinately. I think the previous poster was just using the term agar to mean mycelium culture.

yeah, an extract if you consider drinkable coffee to be an extract. guarana seed "coffee" for the hydration step is probably a bad idea...but like you said "theres no harm in trying" we probably could nutralize any tannic acid with lime.
maybe just pure caffeine is something to try next.
i found it here for cheap -
http://www.aonevitamins.com/caffeine.htm
i think that the mineral oil just works like an ultra barrier to contams

yeah, def. try it!!
theres been a bunch of experiments with caffeine, in coffee and energy drinks and the like. do a search and i'm sure you'll find stuff in advanced and in grow logs.
let us know if you try it and how it goes!
