It's just a top layer? Let the myc fully colonize if you put more coir in now colonization will take longer. If you want to case the substrate wait until full colonization.

I don't think this tek calls for casing. Let it ride man.

Do what I did make 10-20 shoeboxes some top layer some mixed some exposed grain some cased with coir at full colonization etc... Then prove to yourself it doesn't really matter as long as you have experience and know how to grow. There's really hardly difference between doing things so marginally different. I just mix and go.

I'm new to bulk substrates and now have 4 shoeboxes colonising at present.

I'm wanting to watch and learn as the boxes colonise and can't do so through the bag.

Can I just flip the lids for now and then bag them after pinning?

My particular boxes have a very slight and partial crack between the rim of the box and the flipped lid.

Id keep lids on until its colonized. Some will say to introduce FC conditions during spawn run, this is how it was taught in 2013-2014 and its always worked. Even if i introduce FAE, before the first little pin its all waiting it seems.

This might be "outdated" but it worked for everyone back then, and it still works great now. I give it an okay amount of gas exchange (cut holes in the top etc) while its colonizing and then when i see either a pin or alot of knotting ill take the top off, and prefer to make a tub, but i tried the bag and it does work. Just gotta make sure FAE isnt too low or too high, so id take the bag off and look once a day or two

In a tub i feel conditions are much more stable. But. Its so easy to just put on a bag and it works, so just make sure conditions are right.

For Me, i had to run a fan in the room cause at first they werent getting enough FAE and were malformed and gross. But once i set the fan on a timer (15 mins after every 2 hrs or so) it worked real well and they looked great. Tub contammed after third flush tho which ive never had happen. Was def a good grow though. I think it all depends on the grow room and how still the air is. Also things like space heaters

I know there may be an obvious answer to this question but I’m new to cultivating  and new to making shoeboxes. And, I’m using  BRF cakes for making these boxes instead of grain.

My question is about “spawning ” and “colonization”. I’m assuming  my jars should be fully colonized prior to putting them into “fruiting conditions”?  If yes, then is the 50-80% colonization you’re speaking of after the fully colonized spawn is added to the shoebox substrate prior to placing the shoebox into fruiting conditions”? After which another 10-30 days is needed before seeing pins?

I know this is simple but the process is specific so I want to make sure I’m not misinterpreting one of the steps.

Thanks for the help.

What he's saying is after you spawn your jars to your bulk substrate (coir), you can wait till the mycillium has colonized the surface 50 to 80% to fruit (flip the lid). The 10 to 30 days starts the day you spawn your grain jars to bulk. (Add to shoe box)

did that bisporus shoebox ever turn out 36fucking5?

Just spawned a couple of pan cambog shoeboxes so I'm curious if other people have luck with this. no reason it shouldn't work I guess.

When you say "mix spawn and substrate into a 6-12q plastic storage box (6q is the ubiquitous shoebox)"...

How much spawn and substrate per shoebox?  Thanks man, love your write ups!

Enough to fill it at least 1/3 of the way so one quart of spawn and one quart of sub would be about 1/3 full. I don't measure this stuff anymore i just fill tubs up

Hello - wondering y’all could tell me if you think this box needs more moisture- plenty of condensation on the sides, but I noticed today that the substrate is pulling away from the ends - could be due to mycelium growth but just wanna get your opinions.  Trying to water once a week if necessary.

I'm new, but I'd say it's dry. Also I don't think I notice my sub starting to shrink until after moisture loss by the 1st flush.

Give this a look to read proper surface conditions: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23999053

Am getting fruits with fuzzy feet - add more holes to the bag in this case?

Feet’s are gonna have some fuzz to them. You should be good

They will get funky like mutant if they are starving for something. If they look like happy mushrooms besides the fuzzy feet, leave them

Thanks, they are looking good otherwise. It just made me wonder if I am meant to be dialling things in by modifying the number of holes on the bag.
