GarlicThis one should be more organized and better than the rosemary thread.

Its great stuff for health, they say aged garlic is best. I take a cap late at night so it will be not so obvious the next day. All the spices are good for you.

Why is this thread 30 days old? Who doesn’t want to talk about garlic?

Do you have any high potency varieties of garlic?

I tried doing different varieties but mixed them up and found it a pain. All I’ve grown in the last couple years was music. It is a good keeper, likes our cold winters but it still strong flavour. Might try a new one this year Do you grow? Have a recommendation?

I have two varieties of hardneck garlic growing. The one looks like an elephant type of garlic and the other is a german hardneck. The elephant bulbs were from some of the garlic that my late grandfather planted all the way back in the 1980s and the german garlic was from Amazon. I started with maybe 20-25 bulbs and harvested nearly 30-35 bulbs. I replanted late October of this year and mulched soon after. It rained very much after I replanted. But, I am hopeful that I will have a good harvest in 2019.

Good luck Blank. Garlic doesn’t like water much but as long as you have good drainage it should be fine.

Not whole cloves but chopped up in dressings and such I will. You eat it raw? 😂 you seem very passionate about garlic!

I love the stuff. Grows like a freaking weed and it's very prolific. I'm growing two varieties right now (a Spanish red and a white softneck that I've been using from initially buying a bunch at the grocery store. I'm also trying an elephant garlic. If you're not picky the organic stuff at the grocery store works just as well as the seed garlic from the gardening places for like 1/4 the cost.
Pickle it. That's da bomb.

Nice! I’ve never grew elephant or softneck. I would like to try sometime. Grow the hard neck for storage and strength. As I understand they are usually the stronger of the varieties.
I’m always excited to see them pop up in early spring!

Yeah, here on the left coast US I plant in fall and they pop right up. I haven't noticed any storage issues with the softneck compared with hardneck. Last year's crop starts to get funky right about when this year's crop is ready to be picked.
This is my first try at elephant, supposed to be like a cross between garlic and shallots in flavor and good to roast.

One thing I’ve learned about storing, there is a reason why people braid garlic! I don’t know the science of why, but my garlic lasts so much longer

I use mesh bags. I don't have the skill set needed for braiding. I just lay it out on the carport floor for a month or so and when it's completely cured cut off the tops and roots and stick it in a mesh bag which are hung in a cool, dark outside room. It lasts a full year. Well, most of it does anyway.

My theory is that the humidity in my house is very dry over the winter. I think maybe the braids almost feed the bulbs. Maybe? Maybe not. But it works for me 😃
