Just curious...
    #2527233 - 04/05/04 11:13 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I have a sawdust block of shiitake I have just soaked in prep for a 2nd flush. I have cloned some tissue and am working up some cardboard cultures now and was just wondering...

Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to actually cut a piece off the block, dunk it in some h2o2 and drop it in a little ziplock and actually have a culture you could mail to someone without all the farting around???

And... If this would work, would it also work for different kinds of cakes?

intresting... (i am no expert but here is my theory) First of all, shipping would probably ruin the cake due to banging around and temperature.

Assuming that the temp doesn't get to low/high and you ship it fragile, and it does reach it's destination intact, i would think it would work, provided that you shipped only a few weeks after innauculation.

If it colonizes the partial cake before reaching it's destination, due to lack of area to grow and lack of air i think it will die.

BUT! I HAVE ONLY DONE ONE GROW, i just thought i would throw my 2 cents in here cause no one else did

Not looking to have a fruitable cake arrive at the other end... Just a little chunk of live, non-contaminated culture.

Break/tear a part of the block away, and get a part of the inner "tissue" into a plastic baggie with sterile tools.
Treat it as if you would clone a fresh mushroom, but into the baggie. This should do it.

Seeing as there are many places on the internet that ship live cultures I would imagine it would be fine. But Im still new around here as well.
