Need Some Advice From Writers

When I finally finish my studying (Hopefully this Winter) I really want to start on a book I have planning. I have several of the characters thought out, along with a loose overview. Yet I have a problem remembering good ideas. I get what I think is a good idea for part of the book at the most inconvenient of times - taking a shit, in a cab, laying in bed - although I now keep a pen and pad on the bedside cabinet. I suspect that this is a common problem, and wondered if any writers had their own little solutions?
Also, when is your creative time? I often find I come up with the best ideas when I'm doing something menial and my mind is allowed to safely wander. This isn't the case when I'm just doing nothing though.
Any pointers for a new writer?

Hmm, maybe a small handheld tape recorder would be useful. It's much faster than trying to write down a big spurt of ideas. You can narrate at pretty much the speed you're thinking. I have one in case I come up with lines for my poetry while I'm on an interesting substance or just about to fall asleep.

yeah man, i have the same problem...i started carrying around a small pad of paper and pen everywhere i go so i can jot down ideas...but most of the time, i'll be in class and ideas will just hit me out of nowhere...then afterwards, i can't pay attention to the lecture or whatever because my mind is off wandering and thinking about the idea....i've been wanting to start a book too, but too little time...

smoking cannabis makes me more creative, and i can use my imagination unbelievable.that feeling is wicked...so many ideas,so little memory
so i can suggest you to write when you're high on cannabis...you can take notes when you find something
good luck

buy one of those digital recorders so you can, at any time, spew ideas into it.
naturally another cheaper idea is to simply carry paper and a pen everywhere you go
My biggest pointer for a "new writer" would be DON'T HOLD BACK! You can ALWAYS edit stuff out, but if you leave stuff out you can't always bring it back up in your mind, so write more than you think you should about every detail and then take away the excess later

usually the best time to capture inspired moments, is when you are waking up or when you are falling asleep. it is the Alpha-Theta brainwave state, and is easily achieved w/ drugs, music, yoga or magic. i find that going a few days without reading anything gives me creative writing ablilty. it is ridiculously difficult to get up and scribble ideas w/ a pencil @ 5 am, so i got a Minidisc recorder and a pair of mini-mics and hung them over my mat. now i wake up from a dream and just hit record on my minidisc and say what i'm thinking. it's good to remember. ^ OKM II stealth binaural microphones.

I also agree with the comments on being close to the dream-state
I would imagine EVERYBODY's thought-processes become quite 'creative' while nearing sleep or just leaving it (some weekends I attempt to stay in between dreams and my bedroom for hours into the afternoon )
