mushrooms aren't photogenic but they are phototropic which means that they do not need light to grow yet do need light to initiate pining/fruiting. if you expose the mycelium to a light source too early, then you're essentially telling the mycelium to start pining prematurely. keep your jars in a dark place for the first 2 weeks of the 3 week colonization cycle. when you near the end of the cycle, allow some light to hit your jars.

Recent posts state that, for PF strain, introduce 12 on 12 off light after a week or so of darkness and that most other strains pin better with light from day one. This revision to conventional wisdom is recent and not all temperature / strain / illumination combinations have been studied.
