Can coir contaminate?

cubes in monos on rye.
I grow in a less than sterile area. I always remember RR saying that if the spawn is clean, when you set up your substrate, you can sneeze on the surface, no problem.
But is that really true? I'm feeling like my high spore load (Ive had bad mold outbreaks in my space) is hard on the coir, before it gets fully colonized.
Wouldn't the best practice be to be as near sterile as possible with the monotub until fully colonized?

It "can" contaminate...but it's very contaminate resistant...if that helps

coir is a hot topic lately... its not supposed to contaminate because there are no nutrients. However most of the coir seems to regularly contain random stuff it isn't supposed to, so there is the possibility, but it doesn't seem to affect some growers
Being as sterile as possible with your tub means not being sterile at all, because basically its not possible. Once you have a everything in the tub, its all exposed and there's not really anything you can do about that.

Yes it can; but that is usually only if it was too wet, for too long, and especially if you cook it like me. anyhow, putting a thin sterilized layer of vermiculite on top might help you. edit - maybe try growing invitro until you get the trich worked out, and polish up your sterile technique. you probably don't want to blow through all of your grain/agar/spore etc. waiting for it to just go away.
good luck man!!

Coir can contaminate.
But clean spawn is definitely more important.
If "spore load" didn't matter we wouldn't be telling people to take their moldy substrates out of their growing area.

Ive personally only seen uninoculated coir mold 2-3 times and even then it was cobweb/pin mold not green.
It was also left wet in a closed bucket.

I used 2 month old pre prepped coir once. spawned 3 brf jars to it. needless to say I had to toss that tub 3 days later.
I only use fresh coir now lol.

Yes, but how often do we leave coir in a container that is sweating because its 5 degrees warmer than the room air. Its a little mold making environ, those monos are.

I agree. Spore load must matter, and I know I got it bad. I've cleaned, but its been crazy in here a few times. Which means that closer to sterile is a thing, not imaginary.

Too small of a sample, but I recently did three tubs identical... cased with coir immediately with all of them. First one I taped all the holes. The other two I had varying degrees of stuffing. Both the stuffed tubs molded. the taped up one was fine. After a week I have it untaped and stuffed. Looking good.

Sounds like your spawn wasn't clean

I realize bad spawn is what it sounds like. But my bags grow out beautiful, from perfect petri plates, 4 quart bags in 10 days. I'm confident.
If a dirty room is completely harmless, why do we remove a moldly tub? A heavy spore load is more likely than a light spore load to contaminate. I'd bet $5 on that. I also grow on the floor (long story)... this multiplies the problem. Its there or no growing for me at all.
So I just bought a mini greenhouse and will mix up my monos in there carefully, tape them up and keep them in my not so clean area with the fans off for the first few weeks. I'll report back with my results.

Right on. I say dirty spawn because if you’re using the same coir for all the tubs and only half, let’s say, went to mold then the coir can’t be the source...if the contamination was in the coir they would all be toast. Right?
I remove the moldy tubs because I don’t want my grow area to gather more contamination. For future grows it increases the risk. Plus, eww, you don’t want that nasty stuff in your house.
I mean if I’m wrong someone set me straight on that

Heres what I'm proposing. Warm, moist uncolonized coir gets mold spores landing on it because its open to the room via loosely stuffed holes and they grow and contaminate the coir. So if the coir is somewhat protected from nasty spores when its uncolonized, it is less likely to go bad. Is this crazy to think? Remember, this isn't the same as having room temp coir waiting in a bucket. This is coir in a warm monotub that is sweating on its walls and surfaces.

I recently spawned to straight coir and it contaminated I think this is because my house was really hot so I uncovered it too early and it got exposed

With many different Trichoderma being saprophytes, coir seems like a great medium for growing it. I feel having other microbes colonized further along really keeps the trich at bay for a bit.

Coir is THE substrate for growing Trich. It's literally what they use for industrial Trichoderma production (mixed with grain like rice).

Might want to focus on your spawning some. The exposure during spawning is far more detrimental. You can transfer the mold into it on your hands.

What RR has said is true with a fully colonized grain spawn there is almost no risk of contaminants if you aren't directly introducing them to the substrate. As your sub uses more nutrients to produce fruit the strength and resistance of the mycelium deminishes considerably. I usually get 2 solid flushes before I start seeing contams and this is strictly in spring/summer. Keeping cooler conditions and during winter in general I seem to get more than 2 flushes and they don't contaminate as fast. Always pasteurize your substrate even if you're just top dressing and you shouldn't have any issues. Without reading I'm sure others have suggested similar
