I grow in a less than sterile area. I always remember RR saying that if the spawn is clean, when you set up your substrate, you can sneeze on the surface, no problem.

But is that really true? I'm feeling like my high spore load (Ive had bad mold outbreaks in my space) is hard on the coir, before it gets fully colonized.

Wouldn't the best practice be to be as near sterile as possible with the monotub until fully colonized?

sincerely, trich farmer extraordinare

Yes it can; but that is usually only if it was too wet, for too long, and especially if you cook it like me. anyhow, putting a thin sterilized layer of vermiculite on top might help you.
edit - maybe try growing invitro until you get the trich worked out, and polish up your sterile technique. you probably don't want to blow through all of your grain/agar/spore etc. waiting for it to just go away.

good luck man!!

With many different Trichoderma being saprophytes, coir
seems like a great medium for growing it. I feel having
other microbes colonized further along really keeps the
trich at bay for a bit.

Coir is THE substrate for growing Trich. It's literally what they use for industrial Trichoderma production (mixed with grain like rice).

thanks man! I never knew about the lignocellulosic bioethanol industry until now. lol
industrial enzymes...
