Pastywhytes easy agar - Potato flakes setting in the bottom

I heated my agar on low and stirred but wasn't able to get all of the flakes to dissolve. Figure they would during the PC cycle but now I have a layer of potato sediment in the bottom of my pastyplates. Is this okay? Or do I need to remake the plates? I already put spores on them before noticing the layer.

If it's a small amount it should be fine

Ewwww....I don't know. Did it solidify? That looks like a lot...I've never had that much settle

I'd redo it. Strain it before pouring if you want. I really don't think it'll cause a problem besides looking ugly though.

I doubt it would be a problem having it like this (sometimes you never know but I found this hobby to be pretty failsafe if you sterilize well). Maybe something wrong with the mixture of it being used as a nutrient.

Thanks. Think I'm gonna wait a few days for some growth and transfer to some fresh plates.

I'm thinking I didn't heat it enough initially.

I was thinking you didnt powder the flakes which should make it easier but might still form a slush if using too much the flakes would dissolve anyways I think you used too much. I havent done this yet and am going to be doing it in petris however if I seen this I would just go with it. As long as you got it sterilized it might not grow as fast but doubt it wont grow at all.

In my process of learning how to get the agar recipe just right, I always used the messed up ones and they never seemed to be a problem. I even used ones that were way too thin on agar/potato and they never solidified. Lots of water sloshing around... still grew myc clean without contam and eventually I used it for LI. I already didn't worry about condensation, but after this I really don't worry about it

The easiest solution to this problem is just to use malt extract. That or go old school and boil potatoes and use the starch water.

Thanks guys. I just remade most of them and got the proportions on point this time. Also needed to be heated more on the stove top to get the flakes fully dissolved. All is well.

I've never had a problem with my potato flakes being chunky...i get settling in almost every batch of agar, its no biggie really, the mycellium will still find the nutrition....
