FAE troobleshooting..
    #25265289 - 06/13/18 10:10 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Hello again shroomery. I am Having some FAE issues as all of my tubs consistently have fuzzy feet on fruits. I have changed a few things up and even implemented a box fan into the mix yet I somehow still show signs of poor FAE. I was wondering if possibly to dense of a polyfil ball could be my problem? I dont want to skimp on my polyfil however and lose moisture.. any help is appreciated. Still learning here.

FAE helps regulate moisture so if the tight polyfil is hindering proper evaporation the excess moisture will cause fuzzy feet. Loosen it up a bit.

I've seen fuzzy feet in an open air grow.  Pics would help.

Ya, it's not really a FAE issue more a too much moisture issue

That makes more sense.. Could just simply be too much moisture. Ive done experiments with different methods and had horrible yields because of lack of moisture so I always try to avoid that.. gonna loosen up the polyfil and see what happens. Thank you.

I will be posting pics shortly and also unfortunately in the contams forum. Ive noticed some discoloration on my myc... Could actually be another symptom of too much moisture like you said which would confirm that theory.

very fuzzy feet, caps are bruising blue on some and yellowish discoloration splattered throughout. The discoloration is random and not centralized which makes me think it might not necessarily be a contamination but its possible. Also these are apes so I think the bluish caps arent entirely unusual however that could be again, too much moisture instead of lack of FAE

Ok, this is not as bad as I was imagining. Honestly, I think your surface conditions aren't right. Looking at those pictures I would say the surface needs a light misting and left alone. Side pins, to me, indicate where the conditions are best so we need to get that back on top of sub.

Another thing I just want to add, fuzzy feet can also be linked to genetics...But what I'm seeing in your pictures is more or less surface conditions.

Okay I see. I have some very strong 6000k lights on the surface 12 hours a day so that shouldn't be an issue, unless im drying out the surface somehow.. I did do some fanning over the last few days but I didn't want to mist in case of aborting the pins that are starting up

Misting will not cause the pins to abort and fanning is really not necessary at all....I don't see the light being too much of an issue unless it's right on top of it.

I don't think puck lighting is going to hurt it.

Because as it turns out from the pictures I don't think excess moisture is the issue...I don't think you have enough on the top surface.

bumpity bump. Any more suggestions anyone? Could the dryness on the suface be a result of too much fae?! Maybe I need a less powerful box fan...? I wouldnt imagine that like he said my lighting would dry the surface. But I definitely agree Tomato my surface did look dry. The discoloration has grown some but I still don't believe (or want to believe) its a contamination. No changes in smell or texture. I loosened up my polyfil the other day and that might have not helped but hurt. Ive misted it since however.. I will keep posted.

any possibility that if my lids are too loose on he longer sides it could cause too much air exchange and loss of moisture?

If you're snapping the lids down I don't think it would be a problem.

yes the lids snap down on the short sides, but the longer sides definitely have some wiggle room.. just trying to figure out whats causing the surface dryness. Not the first time ive had an issue with this but usually that only happens after a flush or two. This is happening too early

How often do you mist?

After flushes I try to mist once a day lightly to get moisture back in. But before the first flush I rarely mist, or not at all. Usually after the spawn colonizes I will take off the tape put in the polyfil and do a light misting to create that surface moisture but I didnt do that this time around which could be part of my issue with this tub as far as the pinset goes. But I still feel like theres gotta be something else Ive gotta tweak around and fix

How deep is your substrate?

Does your substrate come upto your bottom fae holes or is the top of your substrate lower?

Are you using ms or isolated strain?

How old was the myc you used to consilidate your spawn?

my sub is 3 inches give or take and my lower holes are about 3 inches above sub level. 42 qt tubs. I use pf tek half pint jars inoculated from your basic spore syringe that colonize and consolidate in 3-4 weeks. I used 5 jars spawn and a half brick of coir mixed with verm and gypsum.
