Would love help ID'ing these mushrooms
    #25263483 - 06/12/18 12:05 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

This is my first post as Ive only recently become interested in the various mushrooms in my area. We have morels and oysters as well as other edibles but I'm not sure what exactly these are.  They come up all over this horse pasture right out of the dung which is mixed with straw. Lately its been very humid, 75+F, and raining once a week. I'm including pictures and will give the best description I can and would very much appreciate some help to determine what these are for sure. My hunch is Pan subbs or Pan foes from what info I can find.

  * Habitat: Horse pasture next to dung & straw pile. Growing out of dung clumps.
    * Location: Northeast Nebraska, United States
    * Gills: Range from brown to dark black depending on age I'm guessing.
    * Stem: ranges from white to tan. Appears to be hollow.
    * Spore print color: 30 minute spore print appears to be black as well as natural spore print left on overlapping caps, appears to be jet black with almost a purplish/blue tint on some.
    * Scent: Smell like a store bought pack of portabellas.
    * Color that the mushroom bruises when damaged: Tanish-Brown
    * Anything else you might find important: There appears to be a mix of several kinds or it may just be my lack of knowledge of the stages of maturity.

I doubt Agrocybe looking at the obviously mottled gills and blackish spore prints:

I think these are Panaeolus, possibly P. cinctulus.

Thank you both for your input.  Is there anything else I could do to help identify these for sure?

It looks like a mixed collection of panaeolus and protostropharia,  I see black and purple black spore prints.

I've never eaten a psilocybin mushroom before. The thought of P.cinctulus growing on my land is interesting. Won't be putting any of these in my mouth without a definite identification, for food or fun. lol.

Go to Wikipedia for good pics of P.cinctulus. Pretty distinctive on wet days, one clue is a kinda fuzzy stem. They don't blue, even at base. I have picked hundreds of P.cinctulus in New England ( although years ago ) and the fuzz stem and two color caps when wet are your clues. You need about 8-10 dried grams from them in this area, can be variable to location. Go to Wiki, great pics

Ok I'll check that out.  The pics on wiki, the stems look identical to some of the pictures I have but didn't post. Interesting.

They do blue at the base occasionally, it's the mycelium that bruises in this species instead of the fruit body.

Will keep that in mind this summer as I am newly awakened after 25 years and am hunting these again. I never noticed any bluing but will look closer when I find some again. Maybe a regional thing, or a potency thing, or an age thing. I was always impressed in my old field how many would come up as the farmer used a broken down old shit spreader with his dairy cow compost, all hay and straw. We sometimes collected upwards of ten Lbs ! Sadly, there are houses there now, no farm.

I hate seeing pastures turned neighborhood,  it's so depressing when I think of all the lives snuffed out and habitats destroyed,  to bad they dont tear up run down neighborhoods instead of pasture and woodlands.

Ditto. Dairy farms in the northeast are almost non existent now, BIG building boom in the 80's gobbled up lots of farms. Some towns bought them for conservation land thankfully and should be good for hunting liberty caps at least. There were lots of Liberty Caps in that now long gone pasture, ( sigh )

The sun has dried then out pretty well and I did find a few with a blueish stain on the base of the stem.

SO, next time it rains and you get a new flush check out the Wiki pics again, and if you have the distinct Pan subb two tone cap, fairly robust fuzzy stem, AND you get some bluing on the myc on the very base ( try to pull them up to get all the base), and a blackish spore print, you have found Pan Cinc. Protostopharia are mostly harmless BTW if you mistakenly eat some, supposed to be loaded with seratonin, don't know if any gets past your stomach acid though.

if you get a flush get some pics in the field of wet fresh ones, and if you get any tiny amount of blue on the mycelium. Dry as hell here for DAYS

Looks like Panaeolus cinctulus but for the love of god do not consume them without harvesting some freshly grown specimens. The fresh ones are the easiest to tell.

I got a few pictures before my camera died  of the different mushrooms I could find in the same area from the first post. The little yellow/orange guy at the end was one I haven't seen before.
