How to dunk casing?
    #2525474 - 04/04/04 06:43 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

A friend of mine was wondering when and how to dunk casings. She ran a search and found a few relevant threads, one of them particularly useful: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=2395740&Forum=,,f2,,&Words=%2Bdunking%20%2Ba%20%2Bcasing&Searchpage=1&Limit=25&Main=2391513&Search=true&where=bodysub&Name=&daterange=0&newerval=&newertype=&olderval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post2395740

Supposing that she won't be flooding the casing and then letting it drain via draining holes in the bottom of the casing, two questions remain:

Should one dunk at around the fourth flush or after the first?
When dunking, should all the casing material be wiped off and should the remaining mycelium be re-cased?

Thanks for the help.

You could prolly tip the container over to drain the water out when youre finished dunking.
When to dunk and how long depends on the substrate and the individual. Grains dont absorb well so a dunk between every flush is a good idea. Pf substrate is better at absorbing water I believe. You will always benefit from a dunk so go ahead and dunk between each flush if youre not lazy.
12 to 24 hrs seems to be the standard.

Recasing depends on the individual also. I usually only pick off most the aborts and patch.

I definately suggest recasing--you're going to wait for new pins anyway, so why not rinse all those contams away and start fresh?
I wish I could get away with just strait dunking but it just doesn't work out for me...

Should the casing be cold shocked during dunking and incubated after re-casing?

Dunk it in warm water.

When you put it back in the fruiting chamber the temps should be cool enuf to induce pinning.

Would it be at all beneficial or harmful to combine two smaller casings into one larger casing? My friend says that her casings have significantly withdrawn from the sides of her casing, and she was considering combining both of these into one large casing.

I guess the real question is whether larger casings are better (besides for the contam issue).

Also, if the pins for the second flush are coming up, should she just pick them? Will this at all alter the size of the next flush?
