Preparing for first-time inoculation!
    #25256260 - 06/08/18 05:00 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, everyone.  I already introduced myself over in The Pub, but if you didn't see it...  HELLO!  My name is Lion.  I really dig this place so far, but let's just get right to the point...

Set up my BRF jars earlier, and they are almost done cooking now!  I'll continue to document the journey here, and I hope you guys get to experience your grower's virginity again, vicariously through me!

Question; I had a bunch of leftover BRF mix.  I threw it in a freezer bag, and (obviously) into the freezer.  Is it reusable this way?  I can't see why not, except for maybe some water loss?  I don't know.  Has anyone done this before?  I have plenty of vermiculite and flour left, so not a big deal if it's a no-go.

Hmm.  Thinking about it now, it seems I may have erred.  I don't know how I'm going to get the syringe to penetrate that top layer of dry vermiculite, and into the BRF mix.  I really don't think it will reach from the holes in the lid.  Is this a legitimate concern?

Hi and welcome. I've had some low like that before, you should be able to get some liquid to run into the brf mix. Normally you want to fill up to where the threads start.

For saving your mix, IDK. I always just toss the little extra after a make because it'll get moldy quick. Never tried to freeze it though.

That's what I'm hoping for.  My assumption is the mycelium will find the sustenance of the BRF, and adjust accordingly.  Then again, this is a blind assumption.

We'll see how it plays out.  Thanks for the reassurance!

Hello, everyone.  I just want to make an eventless update on my situation.  It's been three days, and of course, no activity yet.  It's my understanding that it could be 7-14 days before I see any signs of colonization.  So, I'm really not worried yet, but I am having some doubts.

This goes back to the concerns I had a few days ago, earlier in this thread.  Although I did reach some of the actual BRF mix with my inoculations, they were mostly in the dry vermiculite layer on top.  Will this negatively impact
the grow?  Will mycelium begin colonization in dry vermiculite?  I'm sure if it does, then it will make its way to the BRF mix.

I know I'm probably just being impatient and worrisome, and that I should just observe and see how it plays out.  However, I can't help it. lol  I have BIG plans for these mushrooms.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Be patient. Can take a few days to see signs of germination. Every where you saw liquid run when you injected should have spores in it.

Great!  That's the technique I used.  I suppose I'm just worried about it getting hung up on the dry vermiculite.  Haha, I realize I am being quite impatient.  It's just very exciting. xD

Thank you, gentlemen.  Cheers!:mushroom2:

I could see mine flow down the glass and to the bottom. I'm pretty heavy handed with the syringe though. I didn't blend the rice so well this time, kinda chunky.

Not me, unfortunately. T_T

I split one syringe (10 ml) between 6 jars, 4 inoculations each.  Some ran down.  Most didn't. :/

That was about 4 days. Seems to be going a lot faster than my first round though the temps were just starting to warm up then and now it's pretty warm.. These cakes are a lot less packed too. Some of the rice is still chunky. I made these with my own print/syringe.

UPDATE: It's been six days now, and...  BAM!  First signs of mycelium growth!

Of the six jars, only one remains unchanged.  The rest are all showing activity now!  I apologize for the shitty camera angles, but I really didn't wanna pick them up or disturb them, so...  These three show the most.

Originally, I was gonna shred 'em up and grow 'em bulk style in a monotub.  After thinking it over, however, I've decided to grow 'em separately.  It comes down to the thought of being shit outta luck if the whole batch goes south on me for some dumb reason.  So, until I get a little more experience, until I know what I'm looking for or looking out for, I'll keep 'em isolated in something simple and cheap.  I'm thinking 3-liter bottles.

Ideally, I'll grow in bulk style soon.  I need a bunch, and it's my understanding that bulk yields a larger, healthier harvest.  Plus, I love all the bulk pics I've seen around here.  When they're all growing in a patch together like that...  Looks pro.

Honestly it seems like the shoeboxes were easier to deal with than the jars. Just some coir and a plastic bin. Shred and mix.

UPDATE: DAY 8

So, the last jar still shows no signs of growth.  There's no mold or obvious contamination either, though...  I'm thinking I'll give it a good shake, maybe a mix.  There are definitely lots of spores still in there.  Then again, maybe it's just a late bloomer, and I should leave it alone.  What do you guys think?

That white looks like growth to me... Don't shake the jars that will mess up the dry layer of verm. Just leave them be, sometimes it can take 2 weeks to show growth

Sorry for the confusion, but I didn't mean the last pic.  The last of my six jars that I talked about earlier in the thread doesn't seem to be doing anything.  I'll take that advice, though.  Gonna leave it alone.

Ahhh i see now, but yeah don't shake up BRF jars it defeats the purpose of the dry verm layer keeping contams out of the wet BRF layer. Just be patient after two weeks if there isn't any then I'm not sure what to do but I have always thrown them out

UPDATE: DAY 9

Lots of growth today!  It's as if they're wishing me a happy Father's Day!  An interesting note here is the high temps we had today.  I have read that you risk a lot of contamination above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but the mycelium certainly seemed to appreciate the heat and high humidity.  Once I temp-gun'd the jars in the high 80's, I moved them out of direct sunlight.  They're back to normal now, which is mid-to-high 70's.

Still, it seems they love that heat!  Some of the spots I haven't been posting pics of in the thread have literally doubled in size.  And they even have those veins now!  They're like little fungal hands reaching out for life.

As for the dud jar, still no (apparent) mycelium.  There is, however, the tiny beginnings of this very wispy, white shit growing in the dry vermiculite.  I removed it from the others, and quarantined it in a different room.  It's still at normal temps and in direct sunlight.  It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Happy Father's Day to all the mushroom daddies! :mushroom2:

UPDATE: DAY 11

Some of the mycelium have almost connected all the way around the jar!  Man, I need to really research cloning the fruit now!  Gotta be ready for that, and seems like it will (hopefully) be within 2-3 weeks at this point.  I'll probably start a thread to get members' advice.  Seems like agar is the obvious choice, but we'll see what people think!

You're right. If you wanna clone, putting a piece of tissue to agar is gonna be the most reliable. That way you can clean it with transfers before making an lc, li or wedge innoc with it. Take prints to, always good to have a few.

Jars lookin good, got your fc about ready to go?

I have the supplies, but not exactly set up yet.  See, I bought all my shit before I even found this place.  I think I got some stuff that wasn't exactly necessary, like four cubic feet of perlite for example. lol  Now that I've read through various teks and threads here, I would ideally opt to do it bulk-style with coco coir and maybe some horse manure.  I feel obligated to use this SHITLOAD of perlite I bought now. xD  Although, I may just cut my losses.

Also, I was thinking I may do each cake in its own 3-liter bottle until I have a grasp on the whole deal.  I realize this is not ideal, but seems safer?  If the cakes finish consolidation with no problems, I may still do bulk.  Idk yet.  So, yeah...  To get back to your question; I have my supplies, but I'm not really set up quite yet.

I get ya. Bulk's good and all, but in my opinion it's like putting all your eggs in 1 basket. 1 bad jar makes the whole thing sour quick, over saturate or dry out the sub and you'll have problems

SGFC's are cool for keepin cakes seperate while learning and will give you a use for that perlite, but you will put a million holes in a tub making it hard to use for much else after that.

 I enjoyed the individual cakes and learned a lot that way, but there's not really a "right" way.

Yeah, exactly.  Thanks for the insight.:thumbup:

By the way, what is that cactus you've got in your signature?  I see a bunch of users with cacti pics.  I assume it's some kinda mescaline deal?  You guys growing that shit?

San Pedro, eh?  I thought peyote was the only active cactus.  That is very interesting...

Sorry I went to bed last night bro. Yea these are San Pedros, or different Trichocereus Species. They contain a little less mescaline than Peyote, but grow faster and are legal to own in the states.

Check out the EthnoBotanical section. Lots of cool plants grows in there.

UPDATE: DAY 12

Everything is going great still.  There is one thing that has me wondering, however.  One of the five remaining jars still has only one mycelium spot.  It seems to be developing just fine, but it's just from that one injection.  I wonder how far along that will develop if there isn't any growth in the other injection locations...

If the jar is clean enough it'll colonize the whole thing. Just takes a little longer.

You were most certainly correct about that, Lt.  That one spot is really reaching now.

UPDATE: DAY 13

The largest mycelium has grown to just about the entire vertical height of the BRF mix.  Seems like just a few days now until the consolidation phase!

Now I'm wondering about how much yield I can expect per jar...

I ran out of spore juice on my last jar and only hit one point and it was the first to colonize out of the bunch.

ha ha spore juice i love it lol

And to answer your question on yield man I'm not sure what to tell you cause it can vary so much dependent on so many factors. Some people have gotten a crap ton and some have got jack squat. My last single cake flush i only got 22 grams wet... which is like nothing lol. I'm sure there is something some where giving you an estimate but it really can depend on so much its hard to really say

I figured.  Besides the dunking and rolling, do you guys know of any method to get some more growth out of your cakes?  Maybe some kinda fertilizer or food or something.  I was wondering how the fuck the fruit continue to get sustenance after the mycelium have consumed all the BRF.

I don't know of any way to fertilize but i know if you spawn it to bulk the average is 70g from one cake on the first flush. Or at least that what people have been saying, i'm doing my first BRF to bulk as we speak so I will let you know what my yield is on my first flush!

The cakes aren't giving me much at all. Only a couple small ones here and there. I only tried 2 and put the rest in shoeboxes.
The dark purple color of the syringes made me think juice.
I just weighed the dried ones from the second box and it's about 25g. 4 cakes went into that one. It's got a few growing here in 2nd flush but not near as many.

Hmm...

Definitely need to move to bulk style.  Before I put all my cards on the table, however, I wanna at least secure spores/wedges of my own.

Good luck, dude!  That's pretty exciting.  What's your process like after consolidation?

25g dry from 4 cakes done bulk style in a shoebox?  I have to admit, all this jargon can be a little confusing.  I'm still researching the ins and outs of different teks.  But anyway, 25g from 4 cakes sounds pretty decent.

Once my jars are 100% colonized I shredded them i didn't let them consolidate. You don't want them to use up all the BRF is what my understanding was of it. But you just shred the cake up using a cheese grater and add it to some Coir\Verm mix and mix it up. After that let it sit. It takes longer for sure but everyone so far says it yields better. I spawned my first one on 6\5 and i'm just now seeing pins well the last few days. But i have another that i spawned on 6\12 and its already pinning so it just depends i guess. Its a lot easier imo than the SGFC only because you don't really have to mess with them.

That's why I did the shoeboxes. Pretty much any size clear plastic container and coir. Everything else was too confusing or too much work for my dumbass. That thread opticz linked is the reason I went for it. It's kind of set it and forget it.

25g dried after these guys came out of the dehydrator.

Makes me even more excited to try out my shoe boxes when they come can't wait. Thats pretty impressive getting 25g dry!!

On individual cakes a good yield is around 5-7g dry per flush. Dunk & Roll, plus bottom watering is the best thing you can do to keep your average up imo.

Bulking should give a little more, assuming you have clean spawn and can maintain the tub correctly.

Wow!  Hadn't seen that specific one, but definitely gonna check it out now.  Good looks!

Gotta say, I'm kinda reconsidering isolating 'em all.  I have one full syringe remaining.  Maybe I'll do that one BRF to bulk.

No. Basically its little foil dishes under your cakes that you fill with water after pins come in. It keeps the cake hydrated and the mushrooms tend to grow bigger and abort less. Im using them for my cakes in my sig below.

Just search bottom water or look in the stickied tek list. Hard for me to link it on this device.

Well...  My phone shit the bed.  Thank Christ for manufacturer warranties!  Unfortunately, though, there won't be any updates until (hopefully) Monday, when the new one arrives.

Will the jars be full?  Tune in then!
