I'm thinking I may try this too, I didn't put any garlic in this year, but I'll start some soon just to see if I can get some seeds.

Your garlic is probably growing slowly under the snow.

Have you read this? Pretty interesting and it doesn’t sound easy for sure.

yep, planted some this spring. Hope to get some flowers. Wiggling the bulbils out of the flower tops sounds like it might be finicky, getting them out without damaging the flowers.

I'll have to try it next year, I think since I planted in the spring they made bulbs without forming flower tops before the greenery collapsed.

I have some bulbs, looks good, for how short of a time they grew and most of the cloves started were small to medium size.

Put some garlic in this Sunday, traditionally I put in garlic in today, 10/23 but knew I wouldn't have time today. Going to try to get some seed. Last year I failed when the garlic didn't form scapes, probably because it was planted in the spring.

This is a head of garlic  that didn't get picked this summer and started growing. Five of the cloves went into the first row on the left.

The next row was was five cloves from a big chain grocer. Then two rows of five of garlic from a Russian grocer. The heads were smaller but the cloves evenly sized and about 6 cloves to a head. Then two rows of five from Trader Joes, that were a little bit larger and very similar to the head from the Russian grocer.

The rows are about eight inches apart and the garlic about six inches away from each other in the rows.

There's some composted grass laid between the rows and then,
Limestone spread on the bed, probably doesn't need the limeston in this soil, but the garlic loves it.

Covered everything with straw.

I didn't get any seeds. Scapes formed on about a third of plants, but the sheath didn't open and the bulbils had crushed the flowers when they were cut open. Did get some good garlc bulbs.

I was going to give up on growing garlic to get seed, but late summer this year, one of grocers in our area had some garlic that looks promising, it looks like the garlic varieties that are easily guided towards to making seeds.

I waited too long to plant the cloves and they didn't make it, but I had 6 plants that formed scapes, cloves that were missed in the picking last year. I removed the bulbils from them and maybe some flowers on them will give a few seeds this year.

Garlic flowers with stamens. Not likely to get any seeds at all with this amount of flowers, but this is the first time I'm seeing garlic flowers making pollen in three years. Started with maybe forty stalks, besides the ones in the garden I found some in a local strip of woods. Not all of stalks had flowers that matured a lot of stalks only had one or two flowers that got to the point of making pollen.

The bucket of water has a little sugar added to it.

8/4/22 Looks like there will be some seed, only 9 scapes out of about 40 ended up making any, though there might be a few more that were left in the woods to form seed, but they were looking sparse (the flowers on most of them didn't develope) last time they were checked.
