What is a good casing for outdoor cubies?
    #2524740 - 04/04/04 04:43 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Afoaf is planning on growing mushrooms outdoors and would like to know if anyone who has done it before or know what they're talking about has any excellent casing recipies?   What should I case on the bottom and the same question for the top.  The same thing?  I plan on having perlite on the very bottom with some kind of weed plastic screen barrier on top of it so it won't actually be touching the casing/or spawn if that helps any.  Thanks for the info.  Rudiger420

Welp, they will be equidors and tialands. Both easy to grow. Very anti-contam. I want something cheap, but not too cheap like just potting soil. Wood chips I'll save for another day unless you know of a casing that the shrooms would thrive on them.

Do you have Spanish Moss where you live?

There is a thread somewhere that discusses it's use to hold in moisture on an outdoor bed.

The stuff grows wild everywhere where I live so I'd say that makes it pretty cheap for me. For you? I don't know.

I have used moss, straw, wild grass, and no casing...all with decent results.

The casing depends on your environment. If you are doing this in your garden you don't have to worry about a casing as much since maintanance is more regular. I had a bed that fruited continuously for two months (Winter stopped the fruiting) w/o any casing. If you are doing a bed in a more remote location, casing is more of an issue.

Of the various casings I have tried for beds that were checked on every few days, moss was by far the best in producing healthy flushes. I would case with 2-4 fluffy inches of washed, and pasteurized moss. Moss is difficult to clean from stems. Wild moss (the kind I used) has many contaminants present, often molds would set in after the first or second flush, that is why I suggest pasteurization or even sterilization. The moss can be rehydrated very easily. Either water the moss directly by simulating rain or gather the moss, soak in a bucket and return to the bed.

I used a standard 50/50+ casing mix to find it dries out extremely fast outdoors.

I am new to this, so my experience and advice is limited.

Joshua
