I sent up to 10 specimens to Alan Rockefeller for confirmation by DNA, I will post the results when they come in.

This is so cool. Did you just find the lone fruit?

I believe Tampanensis is a variety of Psilocybe Mexicana

Several over a week, in the same spot with sclerotia. They are really small, nothing like what I expected it to look like. The picture doesn't even look like it in real life, I can't see the umbo on the cap without a picture or hand lens. If you've seen a panaeolus papilionaceus without veil reremnants  that had a smooth cap, that's the way it looks to the naked eye and no wider than 5mm dia in the cap. The gills are thin and narrow. The gills may be 1-2mm from where the gill meets the cap trama, when dried the stipe is sewing thread thin.

I was gunna ask if you found sclerotia as well!!
What state was this? Fl?

That is teeny I'm amazed you found it. I've had them grow tall, sometimes the caps get bigger, but for the most part they're always pretty small. Not uncommon for me to get many fruits about the size you found (indoors)

That's why I threw the first 2 away,it was the 2nd and third specimens that got my attention.  The 2nd time is when I noticed blue bruising and purple spores, 3rd time I found fruit I saw the sclerotia.
Boredom is what prompted me to go back and bring some home, they are so small and look really different in real life compared to my pictures, I can't see the umbo without a picture or hand lens. The stipe is covered in fine white hairs easily wipe off with handling. .

Re: Psilocybe Tampanensis [Re: Doc9151] * 4
    #25322090 - 07/12/18 01:00 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

DNA results came back today:

aTGACTTGaCTTGGTTGTAGCTGGTCCTCTAGGGGACATGTGCTCGCCTTGTCATCTTTATCTATCCACCTGTGAACCTTTTGTAGACTTGGAACTAGTGAATGGGAGAGCATGCTCTCTTTGAAGCTATACCAGGCCTATGTTTTCATATACCCCAAAGAATGTAACAGAATGTATTGTATGGCCTTGTGCCTATAAATCATATACAACTTTCAGCAACGGATCTCTTGGCTCTCGCATCGATGAAGAACGCAGCGAAATGCGATAAGTAATGTGAATTGCAGAATTCAGTGAATCATCGAATCTTTGAACGCACCTTGCGCTCCTTGGTATTCCGAGGAGCATGCCTGTTTGAGTGTCATTAAATTCTCAACCTTACCAGCTTTTGCTGATAATGGCTTGGATGTGGGGGTTTCATTTGCTGGCTTCTGTCGGCTCCCCTCAAATGCATTAGCTGGTACCCCGCGCGGAGCCGTCTATTAGTGTGATAATTATCTACGCTGTGGACATCTGCATCAATGGGATTGTACTGCTTCTAACCGTCCATTTACTGGACAATACAATGACAATTTGACCTCAAATCAGGTAGGACTACCCGCTGAACTTAAGCATAtcA

The sequence is the same as all of the Psilocybe atlantis sequences, and 5 bases different from Psilocybe mexicana.  Since this is the same species as Psilocybe atlantis, the older name P. tampanensis takes priority.

Macroscopically, P. tampanensis has a smaller, more convex and lighter in color cap than P. mexicana.

Before this collection arrived it was thought that P. tampanensis was P. mexicana and P. atlantis was slightly different, but that is not the case.

Extremely interesting. Do any of these specimens have the irregularly branched cheilocystidia as described for P atlantis?

I will find out, I haven't had the chance to do much microscopy lately, I will post pictures this evening.

I found a second batch on a sand bar located on the Perdido river approximately 3-5 miles apart as the crow flies from the original find, they are much bigger than the specimens I collected  and sent to Alan.

Most of the original collection was sent to Alan with the exception of 2 specimens,    I will post pictures of both collections for comparison.

So doc or Alan, is this the first p. Tamanensis find that's been recorded and documented since the original?

This reference below would be the next documented P. tampanensis find if you accept that P. atlantis = P. tampanensis.

I'm sorry I think what i meant was from around the original location that they were discovered. I knew about the p. Atlantis finds here in GA and a few in Alabama i think. Honestly the question sounded better in my head before the fingers ruined it lol. Just thought it would be cool if this was the first one found in FL since the original discovery around Tampa.

There was another singular find reported in 1996 from Mississippi. I compiled all the Mexicanae references in the pdf linked below. It's a bit outdated now, but still has some good info.

When I first saw them, I never would have guessed what they were. It was boredom that led me to pick them and subsequently identify them. They look nothing like the pictures in person.

They look like a panaeolus papilionaceus before the cap opens fully or like a drab little brown mushroom. I think they are being overlooked.

This find changed the way I hunt and collect, I will never ignore another mushroom like that again, thank goodness for Boredom. For now on I will be doing more micro work on my finds.

Today I am going back to the spot to see if I can collect a few specimens in order to make prints. Alan Rockefeller recommended that I get prints to a few trusted cultivators that will help get them out to the masses. I have one print at the moment, the other one I had was sent to another trusted shroomery member, hopefully she will help distribute prints from the one I sent her.

Good work Doc9151. Try to get some habitat pictures. I'd love to see how they look still in the ground undisturbed. Some future field guide publisher will want it, I'm sure.

I wish I had enough grow knowledge and experience to help grow and expand the prints along side of the heroes of the shroomery, but that's weeeeeeel over what I'm willing to take on lol. I would also like to see habitat and in situ shots of these. I am absolutely enamored by psilocybe, not only for the psilocin, but they are just amazingly beautiful specimens and they always look like they hold the secrets to the universe. Congrats again on your find doc! I'm in awe at this thread.
