Whey protein powder and stomach pain. Is there a link?
    #25242688 - 06/01/18 10:54 PM (4 years, 8 months ago)

I've been suffering from a severe stomach pain for months now and my doctor prescribed me some Lansoprazole for it (which it's not working btw).
Today I had a protein shake after working out at the gym and felt a distinct pang of pain to my stomach.
I then thought that this could possibly be linked to my problem?
I was researching a bit on the internet and found out that one could even be allergic to whey protein.
Anyone else ever had this sort of reaction to it?

Whey protein is known to cause inflammation, so it very well could be what's causing your discomfort. I can't eat it, or any other dairy based products because of that.

Also, not to freak you out or anything, but stomach pain can be a sign of colon cancer. Just brining it up because an extended family member who was dealing with stomach pain and IBS for awhile was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. If he would've went in for a checkup right when the issues began, he'd likely have a much better prognosis.

Perhaps casein allergy.

I wouldn't mess with to many protein powders, try eating food to get your protein.

Nice webmd post, you know webmd where if you have a minor ache and pain you clearly have cancer or weaponized AIDS.

As said, I've already seen a doctor and gonna see him again 'cause whatever he gave me is not really working for me. Hopefully he'll figure out what really is going on this time around.

I'd bet food allergy too. Maybe dairy.

Easy thing to test.  Start tracking your meals and your symptoms in a journal.  It will help you and your doctor narrow things down and rule out some more obvious things.  Then also get any testing done at the doc.

Super SUPER common for doctors to not diagnose gallstones or appendix issues.

I think the most common issue you could have is intestinal wall damage / inflammation. After that 2 and 3 are gallstones and appendix.

Imo seek an ultrasound / blood test.

Done and done. All good there.
Going to see my doctor in a few days again, let's see what he'll try next

Ps: I think I'm gonna quit protein shakes in the meantime though. Just in case.

Not really because im cutting and eating around 1800 calories a day, and its hard to get enough protein. its about 90 grams of protein. I drink a scoop in the morning, and one pre and post workout.

Oh another 2 things it could be are constipation and gas. You can be constipated in your intestines not just your asshole  It can be a really horrible pain in your gut. A fix is not eating until you poop  or you can take an overnight laxative to clean everything out before eating.

But regardless go back to the doc for an ultra sound and a blood test.

It would be hella disappointing if, after all this discomfort, I'll find out that I just needed a poo

Intestinal gas can be some downright righteous pain.  Common enough that people often go to the ER thinking there is some major about to kill them, only to have the doc push on their stomach a bunch, let out a bunch of massive farts, and feel better.
