Mushrooms for color
    #2524146 - 04/04/04 12:20 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I noticed a couple of books on using mushrooms as natural dyes in my copy of the fungi.com product catalogue . I thought it was a very nice idea to dye a T-shirt for myself or a friend of mine in some shroomy color. Just because it's possible. And imho - very cool indeed. Has anyone read any books on this (like Miriam Rice's "Mushrooms For Color", Arleen and Alan Bessette's "The Rainbow Beneath My Feet" etc.)? I don't feel like buying these books myself right now, so can anybody please tell me - what mushrooms can i use and how do i color a T-shirt using them?

Thanks in advance,
ivi

there are a few different mushrooms you could use for each color,
which color are you interested in?

to make the dye you will need ammonia, boiling water, a ph tester, and lye.

cotton will not dye well with mushrooms, silk and wool dye well, but they are a very different fiber than cotton. It is not like you can go out and just find a mushroom that will give you a certain color + you need alot of them. They are good and worth the purchase.

Asians and Africans still use mushrooms for dye colors for their daily outfits which resmeble univ forms but are common daily tribal clothes. The Ahka in Northern Thailand use those shrooms for dyes.
