Substrate Storage
    #2522786 - 04/03/04 07:23 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

some random person i met today was asking me a question about mushroom cultivation. He said that he had mixed up some substrate (brown rice flower and vermiculite) and put it in some jars for pressure cooking but he had a lot left over. Now he's planning on preparing some more jars in a week or two, he's wondering if he could ziplock the leftovers and put them in the freezer to prevent possible mold growth or whatever might occur until he has a chance to use it later on down the road. Would this be a good idea? Also although he had already added water to it earlier it's fairly dried out now and he's wondering if he did save it how much water would he have to add concidering that he's not sure exactly how much is left over in comparison to how much there was..should he just estimate it? Many thanks.

Peace and Much Love.

they will contaminate unless sterilized.... the freezer may save you but its better to try and make just what you need or try and sterilize all of it... a microwave will workm remember at freezing it shouldnt mold vut it will need to be re-sterilized before use

well the guy was planning on sterilizing it before use, but not resteriliziing, as it was never sterilized in the first place, this is just leftover from a batch of subsrate mixed up, on the substrate that was put in jars was sterilized, the left-over is just that....left over. But yeah I feel like the guy probably put the substrate in the freezer last night and so he may end up using it on down the road.
