red staining Agaricus (?) - May 2018
    #25227863 - 05/25/18 12:43 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Hello, hello.
Can anyone confirm that these are an Agaricus, and perhaps even narrow it down to a species?

immature, but demonstrates how vividly they bruised/stained:

Habitat: on the ground, in soil covered with wood chips/mulch (probably cedar). near a maple tree.  there was a locust tree here, but it was cut down years ago.
General location: Midwest USA, in suburbia.
Cap: tan/brown with scales
Gills: pinkish-brown and then matured to a dark coffee-like brown.
Stem: white or cream, becoming tan or brown with age and/or spores. .8cm-1cm thick.
Spore print: brown.
Bruising/staining: red/pink very easily and quickly at first, less vivid as they matured. also barely present as a reddish-brown in the stems of picked specimens that have been sitting around for a day.
Scent: "mushroomy" like store-bought button mushrooms.

I've dropped a few more pictures in an imgur album, taken over the course of a week starting from when I found them, for a small visual timeline and higher-resolution.

Could possibly be Agaricus silvaticus. I think it's the only one that stains vibrant red, though I could be wrong

following that takes me to A. bisporus, which I would expect to have a thicker stem and the cap to be larger in the button stage. also, wouldn't that bruise pink rather than red?

MycoKey's best match was silvaticus/sylvaticus, although I didn't find them in the woods, and definitely not anytime in September to November.

they might remain a mystery for a while, but at least I can't say this isn't interesting.
