FW-level distortion right here. Why? The truth is already embarrassing enough without your embellishments.
No one in the Canadian gov't has suggested this story is Russian propaganda - Trudeau is saying that Russian propaganda which is using this story to push the claim that 'present-day Ukraine is a nazi state' is disinformation that should be opposed.
Which is absolutely true. This story reflects pretty shamefully on the Canadian governments sloppy PR gimics - applauding war veterans and Zelensky was supposed to be an easy win for a domestically embattled gov't - but it's hardly compelling evidence for a modern-day genocidal nazi state in Ukraine.

I haven't followed this much. I was in a wedding over the weekend and basically never looked at the news.
Can somebody give me a quick TL:DR?

Zelensky addressed the Canadian House of Commons last week - a 98yr old Ukrainian-Canadian WWII veteran was invited to attend by the House Speaker, and introduced as a hero of Ukraine and Canada. He received a standing ovation.
Over the weekend, it came out that he had served in a voluntary nazi unit.
Despite what The Ecstatic would suggest, no one within the Canadian gov't is suggesting that this event was Russian propaganda; and there are currently calls from all political parties for the House Speaker to resign.

someone with zero historical context thought it would be a good PR op to have a ukrainian who fought the russians during ww2 show up at parliament when zelensky was attending. ...
how could they NOT SEE that coming?

It’s a distraction.
It’s like when Southern Democrats would say that the USSR is exploiting segregation to make us look bad. The implied conclusion being: stop talking about segregation being bad.l, and if you keep talking about it you’re only helping the commies.
This is no different. Let’s not grapple with the fact that we’re rehabilitating the Waffen SS, let’s instead focus on our ENEMIES and how our ENEMIES will use this to HARM us.
It used to be that ‘Nazis are bad’ was a simple fact that didn’t need much elaborate examination. But now everything has to be gamified, and now we’re “well actually”ing the Waffen SS.
And let’s not pretend this is some one off. There’s a Nazi memorial outside of Toronto, Canada imported plenty of nazis in the 40s. This idea of “well we gotta use some bad guys to take out the even worse guys” is not a new concept for the West either. Beyond that, the liberal apologia I’ve seen about this stunt the past couple days is the logical result of years of minimizing nazis in order to demonize Russia.

So you're saying this is indicative of the Canadian gov't attempting to rehabilitate nazism; and the equivalent to the protection of segregation laws by politicians in the USA? Absolutely hysterical. My hope is you were just going for an easy joke about how liberals blame everything on Russian interference - but now you're doubling down?
I'm not sure if you're aware of the domestic response but it's far and away from the picture you've painted. There's a growing call for the Speaker to resign over this, and I would be surprised if Canada refused to cooperate with a legal extradition request from Poland. Can you link me to some of the "liberal apologia" you mentioned?
Even in the interview you were paraphrasing, Trudeau spends the first half of it talking about the 'embarrassing mistake' - and when he finally brings up Russian propaganda, it's immediately qualified with a plea for steadfast support of Ukraine. Sure, he uses the soft words you would expect from a politician covering their ass - but no one is saying we should just drop the entire thing lest we benefit Russia.
But to be honest, you're certainly correct that this is a distraction - because this entire situation is a non-issue. It's not the tip of the secret Canadian nazi iceberg - it's the political gaffe of a person who was too eager to have the smelliest fart at the fart smelling convention. It's cheap ammunition for Russia and its cheap ammunition for the opposition Canadian political parties - but this isn't anywhere near an important enough issue to warrant all the press it's gotten.

This will be out of the news cycle by Monday. Nobody will face any repercussions.
Edit: I stand corrected. Speaker resigns. Sorry as an American this level of accountability is unfathomable to me. Wow.

Trump was just found guilty of fraud by a judge ruling and so there may not be room in the news for both.

Not surprising given the state of your domestic politics.
Now let's wait and see if all this new attention leads to criminal charges for the nazi.

They have been in disarray for the last couple decades but recently it has progressed to terminal. Just electing McCarthy was one of the biggest clusterfucks I have seen politically.

It’s not like the Democrats taking more corporate money than the GOP influences their policies like it does with the GOP. The GOP is bad!

Electing McCarthy was just evidence that MAGA couldn't elect a Speaker, and the GOP had to settle for something less extreme. McCarthy is still a tool, but his divided convoluted base puts him in a position where he doesn't always back the same side. It could definitely be worse.

It only took 15 separate voting efforts. I think that represents more dysfunction than political intrigue.
But that's just one example....is there a signature piece of legislation the GOP has passed that has held sway over the American populace, lately? Something like the Obamacare? Definely nothing like Newts Contract with America back in the 90s? I can't think of one with mass appeal.
