Stuck AA cooker lid
    #2522826 - 04/03/04 07:37 PM (20 years, 17 days ago)

Just got my all american cooker lid and after firing it up and letting the pressure hit zero i couldnt twist the lid to take it off..... I had to pry at it with a crowbar to carefully pull it off.....

So the lid popped up and then i go to use it a second time....Lid is stuck again...this time a make a foolish decision to boil the water and let the pressure push the lid up. It did push the lid up.....straight into the oven hood and smashed the light before falling back down....

So i test the PC out after my mini explosion and it works, but now the lid is stuck ... again....its cooled completely and i cannon twist it to get it off.....

I read that a vacum can occur if you dont pull the weight right away and let it cool, the vacum then pulls the lid real tight. I pulled the weight but the lid si still to tight to get off....

anybody else experience this?

I recently broke the handles off of my friend's mom's PC.
I left the lid on her Presto model 7B for 2 days, and it was stuck on there VERY tight.  Well, I wound up breaking 1 handle while trying to turn the lid, and said fuck it.  Later, I thought, "Damnit, I have to get those jars out of there!"  So I psyched myself up, went at it again, and broke the other handle off!!!

Eventually, I just couldn't fall asleep until I got those jars out.  So I heated it up on the stove again, just until it was very warm to the touch, and put it on the floor.  One thing was going through my head, "GET THOSE FUCKING JARS OUT OF THERE!".  Next, I put on a very nice pair of unlined leather gloves (for a better grip), wrapped my legs around the body of the PC, and twisted with all of my strength.  After about 2 minutes of this, I got the lid off!!  :eyemouth:

Well I ordered some new handles for it ($15), and returned to my friend who was none the wiser. Now, all is well.

Well it's a true story that has it all.  I can laugh, and can cry about it, and it just might make an interesting short film.

This may be added to my sig too!  I'm sorry man, that sucks.  I mean, that's a top-of-the-line PC that you've got there!

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that I put my gloved hands on the smooth metal lid itself, and not the handles (I had already broken them off), which is why I needed a better grip.  Of course, that makes it all the more ridiculous that I couldn't get the lid off with the handles, but I got it of WITHOUT the handles.

By Crom, the gods have had sport with us!

Yay i got it off!

Ended up using a rubber mallot...
AA pressure cookers have wierd lids, they do go on straight, one side is supposed to be a little higher than the other....so i malloted the side that was high up for a few minutes then it slid down, the other side popped up and the lid was open! Gonna keep my mallot next to my cooker now...hehe

so whats the cheapest place to get a new handle?

Hey, you know, almost every time I use mine I have to use a monster screwdriver to pry that bitch off. Done it a hundred times still works fine. Waiting till the pressure goes down is a good idea or it can get ugly.

That's where I got mine, and it appears to be the lowest-priced as well.

all of the times I use my AA921 and 925x I have never needed to pry off the lid
you guys may be clamping it to tightly or need to renew the petrolium jelly on the rim of the PC...

Out of 12 times I've used mine, only twice has it come off.
Rest of the time I 've used a large screwdriver. It's cool to know I'm not the only one doing this.

The only time mine has gotten stuck was when I waited for it to cool completely. If you open it right after pressure has equilibrated and it is still very hot to the touch, it should slide right off.

Peace - @cro

Vaseline and a rubber mallot?

Man you are killing me-I really dont want to give this up cause this is kind of funny.
Next time it gets stuck put it in the sink(after it has cooled down lol)and run cold water around the lid and if that doesnt do it ,put ice on the lid-it shrinks the gasket and releases its seal!!

but before you do that I would appreciate it if you would try the pry-bar and etc....hahahah
good luck

Doc34: I am currently experiencing the "stuck lid" phenomeon. The ice on the lid doesn't work on All American PC's because there's no rubber gasket. Thanks, though.

DieCommie is the SHIT! The rubber mallot works like a fuckin' charm! I was skeptical, but it worked exactly as described. Thanks again!

This happened the first time I ran my AA. Stametes says you should open it in front of a laminar flow when this happens. He also says that the quick shift from a positive pressure to a negative one (like an autoclave) helps kill more contams.
