Greetings, freaks, friends, and fellow companions of night. I come to you now with an urgent warning. The written word is dying. It seems these days no one reads, it's seems these days no one writes, and it's seems these days no one discusses anything of real substance. As writer, I find these trends to be very concerning, for it is from literature we derive times greatest lessons. Subsequently, I've made it a part of my life's work to help breathe life back into this dying art however possible. And so, I present you this, a shroomery book club!
Some time ago I came here presenting this idea once already and was met with more interest than, frankly, I was expecting; but due to outside forces I was unable to move forward with the idea at that time. I came back to you now because it is of my belief, now as it was then, that among the trolls, addicts, and shitposters there are some creatures of great thought an intelligence presiding among these boards. Creatures that might take an interest in just such a thing.
To start out with the book club will mostly be focusing weird short stories. One a week, on Friday, a new short story for the following week will be posted and at such a time members would start discussing the previous weeks story. These short story's should take no more than 2-3 hours to read making it more than readable in a weeks time. To start out will I will likely focus on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, and Poe. But this book club is just as much my book club as it is yours and as time goes on it's my vision to have the members vote on the next weeks story. The only rule being that a free text as well as audio copy of the story be available for any stories chosen.
Our first weeks discussion, starting next Friday, will be on perhaps the most notorious story belonging to the genera of supernatural, H.P. Lovecraft's the Call of Cthulhu. The keystone from which Lovecraft's now famous Cthulhu mythos was built around.
An text copy of the story can be found here. http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/cc.aspx
And an audio copy is the story can be found here.
More information to come at a later date, but I wanted to get the ball rolling as soon as I could. So if you're interested, please express interest here and read over the Call of Cthulhu once or twice before next weeks discussion. Thanks!

I'll hit it as soon as I've finished my current reading; Diary Of An Oxygen Thief.
I'll be putting that one in for the book club next week, it's fucking awesome and short enough to fit the bill.

Yes, if need be exceptions can be made, but for the most part I'd like a free textual and audio version of the story to be made available such that no one has to go out and buy anything. Seeing as many short stories if not most short stories of note are available for free online, this shouldn't be much of an issue.

Many modern consumers of literature do so in audio form along their daily commutes and I wanted to be inclusive towards them. But as I said exceptions and changes can be made. Despite the threads title this is OUR book club, not mine.

Stop spamming the thread please sunshine. You've got plenty of your own to gum up.

I like the idea but I don't want to have to dig around and find the audio for stuff that's supposed to be read

Create a group or something so this thread can be a PM with new things to read.
That's something I was fooling around with ideas for. Wasn't too sure how to execute this, might make it into user created forum? Suggestions are welcome. What exactly do you mean by group?

That's 100% fine, it was just I thought, but if you have a good suggestion for something and can't find any audio recordings of it I'd hate for something so silly to be what holds you back. But if there is an audio recording easily available I'd just ask that it be provided, that is all.

It a PM group message thing. Go in the PM section and you'll eventually figure it out.

Sweet! I usually stay away from the PM section of the site so I'll take a look! But at the same time I don't really want it to be a thing where people have to ask for inclusion because that will surely exclude those too stubborn to ask that otherwise would have participated
Feedback and suggestions from those looking to be involved on how best to execute this would be greatly appreciated by all.
