Please help me determine the status/health of my shoebox APE tub.

Everything has been pretty slow going with this grow. I haven't been keeping log of the exact times of each step, but I know that I mixed the spawn with the sub almost 4 weeks ago. I let it colonized the sub for about 2 weeks (possibly a little more) before putting into fruiting conditions. This is one of two tubs. The first tub triched out about a week ago. This one seems to be OK. Judging from the looks of the surface, how would you say the tub is doing? Does it look healthy?

Your mycelium seems very matted and glossy. Ive had that happen when I water/mist too heavy and it will form a barrier on the top of your substrate.

It does look matted and glossy. But I have not been misting much. There was a lot of moisture resting on the surface during colonization. Maybe that caused it? Will that prevent it from fruiting?

Now I'm reading that this sort of matting may occur when the sub gets too dry? I wish someone would chime in and help me out....

I am no expert, but arent you supposed to case APE and PE? Looks like it wants to pin to me. Bet if you put a 1/8th" to 1/4" pasteurized casing on it and misted the casing it would be fine.
Sometimes I have seen good results with 2 parts coir to 1 part potting soil and 1 part verm. I have seen others use use coir and verm 50/50 and others say just use plain coir.
I am a noob too so if someone more experienced chimes in follow them. Otherwise it wont hurt to case.

Taken later in the day where the top of the sub is drier.

It's looks really bacterial, probably the reason why it matted so easy. To be blunt, if it was me I'd toss it. It's been 4 weeks and it doesn't look like anything will grow, at least not on that surface because it's ruined.
If you don't wanna trash it I'd consider flipping the sub and adding a thin layer of coir on top and just try not to mist if it isn't needed. With the top layer of coir you shouldn't need to mist, do it, but only if really needed.

What do you think caused it to be really bacterial? Bad spawn? Also, if it was bacterial, wouldn't it smell bad? This doesn't smell bad. Smells like mycelium, especially after I mist it.

If your surface is matted it will create a very strong barrier that a pin won't get through. That's what those brown spots look like to me. Once matted ive never successfully gotten a single pin to form. Hopefully a TC will chime in soon.

Flip it over as was suggested earlier and put a thin casing layer on it.

I was in same situation over 2 months, and it is barely starting to pin. what I did is flip them and case with verm then leave em alone

Thanks everybody for the input. Here's an update (and need advice). Two days ago I flipped it. I did not case it as I didn't have time. I just returned to check on it today and in spite of not casing, there is definitely some pinning going on. Now my questions are: 1) The top of the surface is not wet....meaning the tiny beads of water that we generally think of as ideal surface moisture. It appears to be drier than that. Should I mist or not worry about it since it's already started pinning? I've heard that misting pins this small can cause a lot of aborts. 2) How is my setup in terms of holes in the top part of the tub? On each side I have 2 holes closer to the sub, and one hole closer to the middle in the upper part of the tub. Judging by the rate of evaporation when I was misting before I flipped the sub, it's a good amount of FAE. Maybe too much loss of moisture, eps if I stop misting. I don't want to dry out the sub. Should I proceed as is or maybe use some polyfill to slow down the rate of FAE? BTW for size reference these are 6qt tubs. Also, any dark discolorations aren't trich.....it's sub that wasn't completely colonized.
Thanks!!!

You don’t need holes in your dubs. Now we know why your sub dried out. Next time keep the lid on until the pins grow toward the lid, then dub with another shoebox with no holes. You get plenty of GE for colonization, and FAE for fruiting through the ill fitting lids and gaps between dubbed tubs.

During colonization the tub was covered with tin foil with only 2 small slits covered w/ micropore tape. It wasn't until fruiting that I switched to the holes. Ok for next time, but what should I do now? It's pinning. Should I cover the holes? Covering all the holes doesn't seem like a whole lot of FAE, even with the tiny slit. Should I mist? I'm sure there is some water content in the substrate even though the surface is not really moist.
BTW, are we sure that the reason the original top of the sub got matted was because it was too dry? It never seemed dry and I was pretty vigilant about misting. Someone mentioned that it became "bacterial." But I'm not convinced it was overly dry due to too much FAE. I mean, it could be, but it doesn't seem that way. Maybe it was too moist?
