Bulk grow - Does too much heat stunt growth?
    #2522631 - 04/03/04 08:46 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

hello all,

bulk grow setup as follows:

- opaque rubbermaid bin with glass lid on top
- light source fixed above and outside the bin shining in
- some degree of greenhouse effect is evident
- mushrooms are growing but gets limp before maturity

MY QUESTION IS:

1. how much does greenhouse/excessive heat affect mushroom growth?
2. how important is lighting once pin set is achieved?
3. what other factors affect mushroom limpness?

with heat the main thing to worry about is contams. Shrooms will grow in some pretty hot weather but if you keep them cooped up in a small warm stagnant area contams will show.
Lighting isnt important. I dont even think you need it once pinning has started.

Are the shrooms oversaturated? Are you misting them directly? You maybe overwatering the casing.

Depending on how much substrate you are growing on, and like mickywilliams2 said, you probably won't need to add very much moisture to maintain the right RH and casing moisture levels. Gas exchange is very important, and I noticed that you left that out. You also left out the mention of a bunch of aborts, so I'm probably off there . Dunno.

mickywilliams2:

well now that you mentioned it, i tend to be generous with misting, because i assumed since mushrooms suck a lot of water from the casing, that it is always better to have the casing a little extra moist than too dry.

after pin set, i mist every few days (only on the walls of the bin), and i heavily mist the casing in between flushes to replenish the moisture level. is that too much watering?

Che_Night_Soil:

in terms of gas exchange, i air out 1-2 times day. i get the usual aborts here and there, but my problem is the mushrooms grow well, but most of them get limp before the cap opens, and they either droop over or fall over completely. any suggestions?

I guess you might have to be more specific in terms of substrate type/depth. I found this
Quote:

Falling over is simply something they do when their fruit weight exceeds the capacity of the myc network to hold them up.

in one of 6T's old posts (btw, where is that guy?) and think that it might be related (he's referring to nutrient depletion). Still dunno :smirk:.

That doesnt sound like to much watering to me taibensis. As long as youre not soaking it like every day your shrooms shouldnt be waterlogged.
I wonder If the light is creating too much humidity causing water to condense on the fruits.
Squeeze the bottom of the stem. If its juicy then the water is probably coming from the substrate. If the whole shroom is juicy then its probably coming from misting or over condensation.

Are the stems fuzzy?
Are the shrooms very tall with skinny stems?? Co2 could be causing them to grow tall and get top heavy. If so, drill a small hole in the chamber just above the substrate. Ive never seen a shroom fall over do to co2 build up but though.

If your light coming into the terr isn't very strong, they may be growing towards whatever ambient light is available. Wont hurt them in any way. Either that or they are too heavy for your casing to support.

Hey man, what kind of dog is that in your avatar? And is that just a puppy or is that what they look like full size?

Are the shrooms very tall with skinny stems??

mickywilliams2:

i'm a little confused - what is optimal, juicy at bottom of stem only or juicy throughout whole stem?  and what do fuzzy stems indicate?

(BTW, thanks to all for the help)

supabeav:

my first speculation was the greenhouse heat building up in the bin, because adding more light bulbs was the only thing i did different from my last grow (which was successful). i am going to decrease the light intensity and see. thanks.

Fuzzy stems are an indication of excessive humidity. I think that he meant juicy fruits, heh, are a sign of them being waterlogged from misting. supabeav mentioned that shrooms will still grow even if they have fallen over, which this guy I know has seen a few times. Is this the case? Are your stems long and thin? Perhaps you should look into automated air exchange via an aquarium air pump w/ several holes drilled in your terrarium walls just above casing level. co2 will settle at this level and can sometimes be hard to exchange by fanning.
Edit: Oops, kind of repeated what was already said.

i will adjust the lighting, misting, and fanning, and see what happens. THANKS.

A waterlogged shroom will be very juicy. Water dripping out with only a light squeeze. If its juicy at the base of the stem then your source of fruit saturation is the substrate. This would be do to over watering of the substrate.
If the shroom is juicy towards the cap then its likely that the reason for saturation is direct misting of the fruit itself (or condensation).
A waterlogged fruit will usually have a yellow or blue tint on the stem and the stem will be fuzzy. Often the cap will be underdeveloped slimy and discolored.
If theyre too wet give them a squeeze. Youll know it.
