Bacterial contamination
    #25207036 - 05/16/18 06:51 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

Henlo shroomers.

So the thing is that some of my grain spawns got contaminated by bacteria. Its obvious because they smell like sour rotten banana, however the whole spawn is colonized. The color of the myc is perfectly white everywhere, but it also produces a lot of metabolites. What if I put these grains in bulk? Will it produce any mushees(ofc i would keep these guys separately) or i can throw them away?
Please advise. Thank you.

Pics? But from the sound of it, I'd throw it away.

You might can get away with slicing off the contaminated part. But your safest bet would be to just discard the whole thing. The mold spores will lie dormant around the room and pop up in one of your next grows.

:justno: There is no "slicing off bad parts." If it's fucked, toss it. Check out this thread: How It Should and Shouldn't Look

Fruit invitro unless you're short on containers for spawn.

I would spawn it to a substrate.
group the contaminated grain jars in one substrate.
If you get some fruits, perfect.
if not, you've learned some lessons ...

I wouldn't do this with fungal contamination though...

I dont see the point in posting pics. Like I said they look completely normal expect the high amount of metabolic liquid. I was suspecting bacteria because of this and the slower grow of the myc. Then I opened these jars and I started to smell the smelly smell. Im planing to put them in bulk substrate anyway, just wanted to hear your opinions. Thank you anyway

Spawn outside.

Theres no way of knowing anything unless we get some pictures. It may not be just bacteria, some of us might be able to see things you can't.

Why risk wasting substrate in bulk and getting bacteria all over tubs that you can't easily sterilize?

There's threads about fruiting in the jars they're already in, just case with CVG and fruit them in the monotub you'd use for bulk. Same everything else. Should save you some difficulty down the road.

*Update*

Today I opened the jars and put them in bulk substrate. It turns out that only the top air layer of the jar was smelly(proppably the gases produced during the colonization). When I crushed up the myc it had only the fresh mushroom smell,so I guess I'm fine. However, there was one jar where I felt the previously mentioned rotten banana+beer+fresh mushroom smeel after I crushed him up.Ofc I used him in a separated bulk. We will see, how will he perform. If there is any interest I can post the result.
