Mycelium not fully colonizing Rye. Brown wetness abounds. What is going on?
    #25216200 - 05/20/18 09:10 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

Trying bulk grow on rye in mycobags. Things were looking great up until they weren't. At this point things are looking quite wet, and mycelium growth appears to have stalled and isn't colonizing those last chunks.

The bag was inoculated with clean agar mycelium about 5 weeks ago, and 2.5 weeks ago I thoroughly mushed everything around to get the mycelium spread throughout.

I probably didn't PC them quite long enough, only about 1 hour, and then temps were probs a bit high at ~30 degree C (86 degrees F).

Next round I'm doing a full 90 min PC (hopefully enough for 3 kg rye in 2 mycobags... maybe I should PC longer?) and trying to keep the temps around 23 degrees C (more like 75 F).

What do you guys think? I did eff up hard and need to toss these guys? Can it be saved? Is it just too wet? Is there some form of contamination? Should I just let it sit and hope that it will fully colonize? What gives????

thanks for yer input

Looks like there are some metabolites, which would be a sign of contamination. Probably bacterial with how wet it is. I'd let it go until there is no noticeably growth at all then spawn outside. Pretty slim chance of having that fruit successfully indoors. And when you spawn try to remove an really wet areas that aren't colonized. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Bacterial.

Bags need 3+ hours. Jars take 90m bare minimum some people do 2 hours for quart jars

3 hours??!! Holy moses, that might be another reason for whatever the hell is going on then. Alright, next bags are going in for 3 hours. Now if I stick 2 1.5 kg bags into the PC next to eachother and they are touching, then the time goes up even more, right? Or I suppose I can try to wedge them apart somehow to allow steam in between?
