Rock in my front yard exploded! * 1
    #25207631 - 05/16/18 01:22 PM (4 months, 27 days ago)

*Minor clickbait - no actual sound was heard*

A rock, 1/4 the size of a refrigerator, was found in 3 pieces. It had been sitting there for decades. If it had just cracked due to rain or erosion that would be one thing, but the pieces were quite far apart - one small chunk was a good 7' away. It could not have rolled there as the front yard is flat and the piece was not even remotely round.

There were no marks like from a sledgehammer as say from from vandalism, or burn marks as from a lightning strike. There are no cracks in the main rock, just an indentation where the beach ball-sized piece came off. The football sized piece was yards away 6-8" high on a raised bed.

Any hypotheses that don't include aliens?

Rocks commonly hold gasses in their inner porosity, especially igneous and metamorphic rocks. Often times energy changes in the environment cause these gasses/pressures to explode. A common phenomenon is rocks in a fire pit will explode a lot, especially if they are trapping methane. It appears that the water vapor or oxygen in the rock was pushing at the walls of the rock matrix. At that exact moment the tiniest amount of rock was weathered off (probably a few atoms or whatever) which weakened the wall to the point in which the internal pressure was greater than the external pressure, causing an explosion.

Could be. It was during a cool rainstorm after weeks of intense heat here in Vegas.

That - or JSB planted something during his visit just to fuck with me. :whoa:

If hit with a pickax, chisel or sledge there would be small fragments and strike-marks.

The more I research, I am thinking lightning strike, but then there are tall trees on either side to better conduct electricity than a low-lying rock. There would not necessarily be a burn mark as I had presumed.

Then there always is ... Aliens! :yesnod:

The rock held a referendum about separation. The separatists won the popular vote. Thus you now have three rocks instead of one.

You might want to brush up you diplomacy skills, you're in for one hell of a fight.

No thats definitely what happened. It is not a unique phenomena, but a startling one when you realize rocks aren't solid through and through.

My guess is this....LOL, one time on a  river fishing/ camping trip we set up camp on an island. There were rocks everywhere to build a cooking/ camp fire so we made a nice ring. LOL, about halfway through the fish fry....those bastards started exploding....I mean like grenades. We had to get about 50 yards away to be safe from the shrapnel. Lol, was the last time we ever used river rock to make a camp fire.
