These were growing in the girlfriends back yard this morning. Anyone know what they are?

Straight from the forum guidelines...

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

I'd guess a psathyrella of some kind. Hard to tell, though.

OK, seriously this time. They are growing in grass in the back lawn in Dunedin. They are about 10mm across cap (One was almost twice that though). Tan brown going to a gold coloured crown. Can't tell you the spore print colour coz i have not learned what that is yet. Didn't check the stem, will tomorrow. There were perhaps 20 odd in the back yard, some singular, some in groups. Got the Canon 300D out and snapped these, they are hi-res if you view the full image:

Will continue the learning quest....

Cheers

You make a spore print by cutting the cap off so it can be laid flat on a piece of white paper, gill side down. Then you leave it there overnight, and the next morning there will be a deposit of spores. The spore print color is the color of that deposit.

Spore print color is one of the most important things for identification of mushrooms.

Another thing that could be useful - please pull one up (don't cut it off) and show us what the base of the stem looks like.

Is the stem flexible or brittle? If it's flexible, you will be able to wrap it around a finger without it breaking. If it breaks into pieces, then it's brittle.

Do they have any particular odor?

Happy mushrooming!

Interesting mushroom. It looks like could be a Panaeolus, Possibly.? Unfamiliar to me;

What state or country did you find them? What was the spore print color?

is the only point of a spore print to identify the colour of the spores? does the pattern matter?

Without a microscope, the only use is to determine the color of the spore deposit. Unfortunately, that color can't be determined accurately without actually doing a spore print. If you do many, you will be surprised at the colors you get on some of them.

If you have a microscope, the spore print is where you should get the spores you examine for shape and size.

Happy mushrooming!
