ID help request - VA/MD area - p. ovoideocystidiata?
    #25207435 - 05/16/18 12:07 PM (8 days, 19 hours ago)

New poster on the site (tho I have read a number of posts before), humbly requesting any help that might be available identifying the mushrooms pictured.

Habitat: found in a bed of hardwood mulch/woodchips in a partially shaded area among mixed hardwood trees.

Gills: medium tan/brown, I think they are not decurrent or broadly attached.

Stem: grey to off-white, slightly fibrous, slightly hollow (a small channel in the center), no visible veil

Cap: as pictured below, none are larger than 4cm. The bluing in these caps is not a bruise.

Spore print: fairly dark, grayish brown. I would like to say purplish brown but not positive. I have a photo of the spore print that I can upload if that would help.

Bruising: stem darkens not long after being pinched firmly. Bruising is not obviously blue but could contain some bluing.

Location / time: found in mid-Atlantic (VA/MD area) in the Piedmont/foothills region, mid-May

I neglected to mention the smell: very earthy and "mushroomy" (i.e. not sweet or odorless or any strange scent)

Thanks to anyone who has thoughts to share..

They look like Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata to me.
Nice find!

And welcome to the Shroomery!

Welcome to the shroomery...

They appearto be actives,  i will keep my guess to myself,  but I'm excited to see what the trusted identifiers say.

I've been knocked off the front page...very cool to see how active this board is.

One other thing I was wondering, is anyone able from these pictures to conclusively rule out galerina marginata (a/k/a galerina autumnalis)? That mistake is the one I am mostly worried about, here.

Psilocybe oviodiocystidiata is what you have. Welcome to the shroomery.

They are all ovoids

all that stain blue where damaged are ovoids.  nice finds.

do not worry about Galerina as long as all of your collected specimens stain blue after being damaged (when they macroscopically look like these, come from this environment, are of the stature of your mature ones, etc etc etc).

one can usually find so many ovoids in the spring in the right spot that one can very readily practice the 'when in doubt, throw it out' mantra.
