What is the best strategy to end the war on drugs?
    #2520230 - 04/02/04 11:52 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Millions of harmless people get locked away everyday for possesion, dealers are making huge markups, and the government is wasting billions. What do we do to change US drug policy?

Expose the injustices to the American public. The Civil Rights movement didn't really gain a foothold in American politics until they started broadcasting the footage of the police using firehoses and police dogs against peaceful protesters.

Millions of harmless people get locked away everyday for possesion,

Millions?

dealers are making huge markups

It is an inherantly risky job, so they deserve to make a fair profit. But calling the markup huge is something I doubt you would find many dealers agreeing with.

and the government is wasting billions.

Tis' the truth.

As the problems with government finance continue to grow worse, which they will without drastic change, we'll eventually reach a place where it is undeniable that drug war is too costly to continue. As states have already begun to do, they will defy federal orders, and penalties will be lessened. It will become more and more accepted that people have the right to act as they choose in the privacy of their own home. I believe the conclusion that drugs should be available to all who want them, with similar controls as prescription drugs now, is inevitable. The powers that be will eventually realize how much will be saved by not financing a campaign against them, and how much can be gained by taxing them.

It just may take a hell of a long time.

In the meantime you can vote for officials in public office that have voiced their support for programs that allow the regulation of drugs.

I remember making a thread a while ago where(I believe) most people here agreed that the drug war was one of the world?s BIGGEST issues.

Yet they will still vote for those who would keep the drug war alive.

Perhaps because we're smart enough not to be one issue voters.

Why wouldn't you vote for the guy who finally ended sanctions in Iraq?

That's why I would have voted for Adolf Hitler. He was a good leader and i'm willing to overlook the whole jew-killing thing.

Because i'm not a one issue voter.

A good strategy is to start them off for medicinal reasons; marijuana for nauseau and such, MDMA and LSD for therapy, then, using these studies, show America how benign these drugs actually are compared to the lies the government tells about them.

http://www.maps.org/research/

As you can see, MAPS is currently doing research with MDMA (this is their main emphasis currently, and also the one they are making the most progress with,) MDE, Ayahuasca, DMT, ibogaine, ketamine, LSD, mescaline, peyote, psilocybin, Salvia divinorum, and here, marijuana. It's organizations like MAPS, MPP and NORML that will be one of the crucial factors in the eventual legalization of marijuana and psychedelics.

I got that.

I guess the sanctions against Iraq weren't as serious an issue to the people here who claimed it was. Otherwise you would not hate Bush so much.

I think a lot of the posters here might have some disagreements as to the way in which the sanctions were ended. :smirk:

I think it is funny that Learyfan is going nuts over Bush and the war on drugs, when Democrats like John Kerry and Joe Lieberman have the exact same position.
I don't think ending the war on drugs has anything to do with voting Democrat or Republican. I know just as many conservatives that oppose the war on drugs as liberals, and as many liberals that support it as conservatives. Partisanship is irrelevant.
