Question about agar wedge

I've been reading up on agar all day and am just a little unclear on the whole 'wedge' idea. I would just cut a piece of colonized agar and place on a wedge and then place that wedge into a grain jar? or do you grow the myc onto the wedge? Or is it best to just make an LC? What is best to use for a wedge? Thanks

You cut the wedge of colonized agar and drop it in a grain jar or on another plate.
Two wedges removed from colonized areas. Try to take from A leading edge if possible.

6 wedges taken to other plates.

Make 3 cuts in your agar plate in a wedge shape. Then stab wedge and remove from plate.

The wedge is your little piece of mycelium that you transfer. You cut wedges out of living not mycelium, not uncolonized agar.
By transfering at certain sectors on the mycelium you can try to isolate some genetic traits.

Okay, understood. Thanks! Why are transfers needed and how many should be done before using a wedge for grain?

They're technically not needed. It is possible to get clean growth at first inoculation. A lot of people like to transfer at least once to make sure growth is clean.
Transfers are done for isolating genetics and cleaning cultures by moving clean growth away from contaminated growth.
