What's your opinion????
    #2518109 - 04/02/04 06:40 AM (20 years, 4 hours ago)

I recently started a grow log to document my first attempt at cultivation. I ran into a road block when my supplies did not arrive when I had hoped because of backorder issues. So, I've been spending my time reading up on casing. I am thinking about trying this method instead of just birthing the cakes by themselves. Seems to be not too much harder and have much more yield potential. But, I have never cultivated before and would really just be happy to grow one cake for now.
So, here's the link to my grow log http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1, check it out and see if you think I should go for casing instead of birthing the cakes. FYI if I do go with casing I will remove the perlite from my grow chamber, right now it is sweating like a pig, probably way to humid for casings. Thanks for the help!!

there is no reason why you shouldn't go straight to casing if you feel confidant.
make a few smaller casings in favour of one large one, then if the worst happens and one contams you will still have others left.
i have hydroton in my pod and my casings do fine in the high humidity.
moisture loss is the main factor regarding performance of casings.
do a serch for starters "rez-effect"
and be sure to dunk your casings after each flush.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I really want to try casings. I had planned on using 4 or 5 either disposable bread pans or nursery flats for the casings. Thanks again!

you're welcome,i'd recomend using straight coir for casing, since i switched from 60/40 coir verm i haven't looked back.

it seems to hold moisture better than 60/40,i formed this oppinion from observing noticably less shrinkage during each flush.

So you are going by the rez-effect as well as 100% coir? I had planned on using the 50/50 plus tek. Have you had any experience with 50/50 plus? I have read little about coir, I'll have to look into it. I've got plenty of time before all my stuff arrives!!!

Nice flush!!!

It's 50 verm and 50 peat with 4% limestone and 15% crushed oyster shell. Just a casing that seems to work for well for people. And if I can ask you some more questions.......
Do you use verm as your bottom layer or do you prefer using casing as bottom layer?
When you dunk your casings do you sterilize tap water or use bottled distilled?

Thanks for all the info man, mucho grande gracias!

Royale: For my first grow, I tried both methods. I haven't fruited a cake since.

Hanky: I've always gone the 60/40 route and always thought it was the coir that was making things dry out quicker. I've been adding more and more verm to my casings each time thinking I'm improving things. Next time I'll give more coir a go.

My water is ultra hard and reeks of chlorine so I am going to go with distilled for sure. Well, I am definetly going to try casing. I think I'll take your advice and try the straight coir on one casing and maybe a 50%verm and 50%peat mix on the other. I was reading that Jiffy makes a seed starting soil that is premixed 50%verm 50%peat with ph stabalizer in it. I'd like to see how that does as well. I am guessing the best way to sterilize the casing material is to PC. I was thinking that I could put the casing in a quart or half gallon jar and PC it. Thataway I could use what I needed and replace the lid and keep it sterile for patching.

How do you go about sterilizing your casing material, and do you make more for patching or use what you already sterilized?

Also, I'm not worried about things drying out in my grow chamber, look and how wet it is in there.... too much?????

I never sterilize my spawning subtrate. Nor do I sterilize casings. Pasturize.

Save a little in sterile conditions to patch with.

Really? Not even the substrate? That's new to me. Not surprising since I am a noob though. Any reason you choose to pasterize over sterilize? Thanks for all the info guys!!!!!

I use straw and dung though. If your just casing cakes, then sterilization is absolutely necessary. And I don't think pasturizing verm is beneficial, but i'm pretty sure the coir benefits from it. Can someone clear this up for me?

Pasturizing is beneficial in that it essentially kills off harmful bacteria and leaves behind good bacteria to "fend off" contams. That of course is a gross generalization, but pretty much covers it.

Thats ok! Gross generalization was all I was looking for. I can research it on my own. And yes I am just casing cakes. Well, thanks again!!

Be sure to keep an eye out for my grow log!!!
(I'll update it as soon as I get more supplies in)

Keep on eye on the glowlog forum in the next couple days. I've got coir and verm in the oven right now and will case on third of a substrate with each of them. One with only coir, one with straight ver and the middle with a mixture of the two. I don't recall seeing anything like this and I'm curious as to the results.
